Posted February 22, 200520 yr Hi Hope you guys can give me some advice, my budgie louey is about 12 months old, he's lived by himself with me for the past month (my ex boyfriend has the other 4 birds!!) And he generally seems fine, he gets to fly around my flat at least once a day it eating lots of seed and millet (but doesn't like the other treats i put in for him) but i've noticed that he always has dried poo stuck to his rear, his poo looks healthy but i'm worried about it sticking to him and try and gentley knock/wipe it off for him but i'm pretty sure this ain't normal. has anyone got any advice?
February 22, 200520 yr this sometimes happens to my bird, but he usually knocks it off when he is preening. if the droppings are normal then there isnt too much to worry about, however if the droppings change consistency or if your bird is not preening himself and cleaning regularly then this may be a sign of a problem. does he sit with fluffed up feathers? just keep and eye on him for now, if there are no other symptoms try spraying water droplets on him or giving him a shallow dish to bathe in to try to encourage him to preen more?
February 22, 200520 yr this is a hard one to answer as this condition is called clag but it is normally a bi-product of something else that is wrong if he seems fine in himself dab his vent with cotton wool or cloth soaked in warm water dont try and pull it of
February 23, 200520 yr Thanks for your advice guys, he seems allright in himself e.g flying round like a nutter, squaking through eastenders and demolishing his millet seed. And he cleans the rest of his feathers all the time he jsut can't be bothered to clean his own butt (typical male!! ) But i will spray him with water tonight and maybe get a bath to attach to his cage!!
February 23, 200520 yr cool, let us know how it goes! if the droppings continue to build up around the vent though i would take him for a checkup to make sure there is nothing else going on. i find that spraying water is better for my birds as they hate baths! but i also have a birdbath, they never use it but i still offer it - try putting some grass or lettuce leaves in it so they can play
February 25, 200520 yr I just noticed that my budgie was the same thing, we washed her up with water in the sink, but after that she was in her cage all fuffed up and on the bottom. We have a incubator and a quarenteen cage, we have put her in the incubater and on the advice of our vet, we were told to give the budgie BAYTRILL at 0.08CC and keep her in the incubator and see if the meds and the warm enviroment, as well she is not eating or drinking so When i administer the meds by syringe i am told to giver the same amount (8 cc) of water by about 6 times a day. I am hoping this will work,
July 6, 200520 yr Thought i'd update you on this, louey still keeps on getting a dirty vent,so he gets regular baths, though in every other way hes fine. So i've been looking for an avain vet, turns out theres a visiting exotic pet vet in my local surgery every friday. So this Friday Louey is going for his Consultation it will at least cost me ?25 (eeekkk!!) but i've got to put my mind at rest!
