Posted June 1, 200816 yr I have BG and Lady, who I am planning to breed together in spring. BG is my lovely grey spangle but seems to have turned gay with Barney, Or is it Barney is gay with BG??? I don't know but they have a bond Lady is a lovely YF grey spangle hen who flips out (literally) when put into a small cage - double So how do i get these two to bond?? I have the small aviary free now so i could pop them both in there?? What are the chances of it working out between them??? I think they could have some REALLY nice babies!! Here is the troublesome trio (from left) Barney, BG and Lady Edited June 1, 200816 yr by **Liv**
June 1, 200816 yr No need to overthink it Most pairs once in a breeder cage bond very quickly and produce for you, regardless of seemingly gay behaviour in the aviary
June 1, 200816 yr Author Thanks Kaz, I hope they will bond strongly when the time comes. They will be my first cabinet pair. When should I put them together??? how much time will it take for them to bond as i am hoping to have eggs during September?
June 1, 200816 yr Thanks Kaz, I hope they will bond strongly when the time comes. They will be my first cabinet pair. When should I put them together??? how much time will it take for them to bond as i am hoping to have eggs during September? Some of my newly paired up budgies take all of 20 seconds to "bond" and mate and first egg by the end of a week. Others take a couple of weeks to produce their first egg. Most of them surprise you with their willingness and more often than not, they surprise you by producing their first egg fairly fast. Its the breeding cage with nestbox and the privacy that seems to make them more keen. Edited June 1, 200816 yr by KAZ
June 1, 200816 yr not sure of your intentions with breeding but it is normally best not to creat DF greys as it can get a strong hold in your flock, you can't tell a sf from a df and it is a dominant gene. but can i have your girl?
June 1, 200816 yr Author I am after nice birds that look better than their parents because they are both spangle, dose that mean their chicks will all be double factor spangles??? Lady was a fluke find at my local bird dealer Edited June 1, 200816 yr by **Liv**
June 1, 200816 yr some will be double factor spangles, but you can contol that gene as it is visually different to the single factor
June 1, 200816 yr You will get some DF Spangles I think it’s about 25%. They both look in pretty good condition, if that’s a resent photo? You can only try them & hope for the best. Some like Kaz said pair in no time at all, others take ages. I bought a show type cock last year & tried it with one hen all the eggs were clear, then tried with others wouldn’t even look at them & has been in an aviary with other birds since with nothing happening, I had just about given up on him, when the last few days he’s gone mad on some young chick…literally…she hasn’t even got her adult plumage & they are mating & carrying on like crazy…some maybe just need the “RIGHT” bird…fussy.
June 1, 200816 yr Author Thanks Norm, I took the photo today especially for this question I have had BG for about 4 years and up until this summer he had not shown interest in any bird. This summer he bonded with a little hen (and fathered 3 chicks, i think - colony breeding ) . Since i took out the nest boxes he has bonded with Barney Fingers crossed when his lover boy is out of sight, he will become keen on Lady easily and have LOTS of babies hehe Edited June 1, 200816 yr by **Liv**
June 1, 200816 yr I agree with Kazza, I had gay birds to hehehe and the mintue they were put with hens ... They bonded 1 took 2 days 1 took 3 weeks But i got eggs, and babies so don't stress mate
June 1, 200816 yr Author Thanks Neat I am so excited about breeding these two. they will be my first show bird babies. I plan to get club rings for them too
June 1, 200816 yr I share in your excitment mate, my show ones are too busy getting busy with the branches apart from each other lol .. I am resting them now and will try again after winter .... I hope you have plenty of fertile eggs .......
June 1, 200816 yr Best of luck Liv, I know what it’s like when you get new birds in & have hopes of getting something good from them, lets hope all works, as I like those two & if everything works you should get something nice from them. I will be watching with interest.
June 2, 200816 yr Thanks Neat I am so excited about breeding these two. they will be my first show bird babies. I plan to get club rings for them too Think ahead with the club rings. June 3, 200816 yr Good luck Liv! The are a lovely looking pair and I hope when the time comes they have babies for you I have had various results with my cabinet breeding so far, but I have to admit to being impatient and messing with some couples. A couple of hens I put down were 07 birds, but then I got cold feet with them cause I dont know when in 07 they were bred, so I am erring on the side of caution and keeping them longer out in the aviary to make sure they are mature enough. My success couple so far, were brought in from the aviary and we know that story so far. Another couple were brought in from the aviary 3 weeks ago with eggs and she hasnt left her eggs, but she only had one baby hatch in her last clutch and I am thinking these eggs are infertile mostly, though one is rather grey so I am thinking it has gone bad. I did put in 2 fosters yesterday from my last nest box in the aviary, so I could take it down and stop that hen breeding and finally free up my big flight aviary! However, one pair I have put down that I am excited about seemed to not bond so much, but were okay with each other for a few days, but I have seen him feeding her recently and she's very eager, she spends a lot of time in her box and I came home from work tonight and she has one egg They have been together about 2 weeks. Good luck and I hope you have more patience than me! LOL
