Hi

I just bought 2 beautiful budgies i know a little about them such as health hygiene feeding etc but general taming and knowing wether they are happy is something i am not sure on.

I have had them (boy and girl) for 2 hours and they dont want to move from the bottom of their cage.

anybody who can give me hints and tips or advice would be much appreciated.

How old are they? (if you aren't sure post a photo and we might be able to tell you.) There is piles of useful info under 'Budgie FAQS' on the top right of this page, your best bet would be to have a good read through that and then come back with any other questions you have. I would keep them somewhere calm and quiet for the moment as they are probably a little scared and bewildered.

If there is still blackness on their beaks they are very young ( too young to have been sold)

As they are babies they will huddle into the closest corner for security as this is what they did in their nestbox .....

remove the grate at the bottom of the cage and put in some sawdust/ shaving/ or newspaper ... let them settle in as they will be under stress from the travel and the NEW HOME , like MB said if you can post a picture that would be better ... Did you purchase them from a petshop ??? As they are not very good at telling the sexes of the birds at young ages >>> GOOD NEWS WE CAN LOL .....

So welcome to the forum, and comgrats on your new family additions? What have you named them???

Hello and welcome :hap:

You have had some great advice so far from MB and Neat. Your babies sound young, but not all babies have black on the beak - that purely depends on genetics not age.

I agree that they should be kept quiet and calm for the first week or two. I normally cover my new birds for the first 24 hours, so they can get used to the sounds before they see everything too - it helps them adjust.

If your budgies are very young they pose a risk of not eating properly on their own. If you see their poo turn bright green and runny, then you know they are not eating.

All birds get stressed with moving house, so dont expect much from them for at least 3 days. They will gradually get more confident and perch, eat, sing etc :o

Thaks for that Liv,..... Didn't know about the blackness on the beaks was from different genetics as all mine do ... lol

Guess that means it time to go budgie shopping again LOL

I can't remember what the stuff that makes the beak black is called, but its a sign of good genes  - so you are doing well Neat

Welcome to the forum. You have already been given some great advice. I agree, cover the cage, keep them in a quiet room, and let them adjust. Keep us updated and don't be afraid to ask anything!!! We were all new to budgies once.

Welcome to the forum

One important thing in the first few days is to make sure they are eating you can tell this if you blow on their seed very gentley and the empty husks fly off, if they are this young you want to ensure they are eating. You won't see a budgie drink water until they get more comfortable with you so that is nothing to worry about if they are eating well they are drinking.

Here is an article from our FAQ section on Taming My Budgie - CLICK HERE you can start to review this information.

Also food and nutrition is very important you should not just be feeding them seed but a variety of foods, I would work on this more once they are more established in their surroundings.

What concerns me is that they are huddled at the bottom of the cage, I assume you have perches in the cage. Can they perch? Also make sure you have a different assortment of perches with different widths, not just the dowel ones that are standard and come with the cages.

Cleaning your cage is very important, change the paper everyday if not at least every other day on the bottom, I put the paper on top of the grate it makes for easier clean up, do a through washing of the cage 1x a month, change food and water daily and wash out the containers each time.

If you have more questions please always ask here on the forum, we are all glad to help out.
