Posted May 27, 200816 yr okay, I decided that I couldn't afford the $50 fee to have the vet clip my budgies wings, so I did it myself. I know its not perfect but it has to be better than what that girl did to poor Egg's wing. Below is what I did to Blueberry (repeated on the other wing as well) (Warning, 500kb images) ftp://users.on.net/05272008043.jpg ftp://users.on.net/05272008045.jpg I've since got my partner helping, as she used to clip chooks all the time, and she is good with a pair of scissors, so Crumble's wing clip is a lot neater . Did I do okay?

May 27, 200816 yr $50 for clipping are you serious ??? cost me $10 for mine and then i had to redo it anyway as Nervada took flight still ..... I left the first 2 feathers of the flight as the first contains the blood feather and then got a torch to view where to clip done the job well .... wish she'd stop biting though lol But yeah can't view your pics either
May 27, 200816 yr Author Sorry about that... posted the wrong url, and can't seem to edit the post now... The correct links are: http://users.on.net/~trentt/05272008043.jpg http://users.on.net/~trentt/05272008045.jpg I didn't have time to do it on photobucket this time, plus I wanted the detail to be visible. I left only the outside primary feather, and I was tempted to cut that off too. He was still able to fly normally with 2 primary flight feathers! Yeah I am serious Edited May 27, 200816 yr by ShadowGhost
May 27, 200816 yr Author Oh good, thanks for that! Was expecting to have done mediocre at best, my cuts are all jagged like... if you think mine are good you'll think my partners are perfect! well, really they are... but yeah.. I was trying to keep a couple of flight feathers for that unclipped "sleek" look, but yeah I can see how they would get caught on things. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to cut 9 feathers off before they couldn't fly too! I guess I should do Egg ASAP too, as that shop girl only cut one wing, now she'll be all unbalanced.
May 27, 200816 yr You did great - it's not about the 'jaggers' its about getting the feathers the right length and knowing where to stop! Well done The 'sleek look' is uncomfortable for a bird as those feathers are normally supported by the other feathers. When they are not cut, they pull and create drag when flapping - not nice for a bird Oh and yes, you can now even up your Egg too - she will feel much better
May 27, 200816 yr Author Ahh thanks Liv! Being a computer programmer I get a little obsessive when it comes to jaggies... ha! (nerd joke)... I'll go fix them up shortly.

May 27, 200816 yr In all honesty I HATE the work, but it's good money so it will do. Maybe my hatred is due to a daily battle with Arcview though, it's an awful program! I plan to work in environmental education so it's a long way from my intended career!

Yeah I am serious i cut off the first 3 feathers cause that is wat a friend, who has had birds for a long time, told me to do. Is this wrong? He didnt seem to mind

June 10, 200816 yr I think you did pretty well there... Last time I went to the vet- Bob Donnerly in Toowoomba (really really good avian vet) I was taught how to clip my IRN and Budgie's wings. They said to clip the first 5 and that the bird will not be able to gain altitude, but will still be able to flutter around inside the house and in the cage ect. That is on both wings. Bigger birds you can sometimes go to 7 feathers. But you have to know the right length to clip them too as you do not want to clip too far in or it will harm the bird.
June 10, 200816 yr One of the sites up above shows a clip where the feathers are clipped carefully almost at the base. I'm going to do it that way next time as it looks better and sounds like it is less uncormfortable for the bird. I think it's the sort of thing you do only if you are confident though
