Hi guys, Im just wondering for those of you who live in nsw or preferably sydney area do you have any eggs or babies at the moment? Im just wondering because my birds dont seem to be doing anything i was wondering if maybe the weather could be interupting them this much do they like it in hot or cold months?

i am in the maitland area of nsw and my breeding cabinet is in my enclosed screened area. i have 3 eggs in the nest so the weather does not seem to be affecting my birds. i covered the nestbox and cabinet at night to keep them warm.

Maybe it is just too cold or something should i cover the whole aviary they are in cabinets inside a large aviary out the back?

KAZ whats your secret?

Although you said they are in breeding condition... maybe they're just not into it, or each other??? Maybe try putting them all back into the avairy, and then after a week or so, put them back in, in different pairs. Whilst they're in the aviary, watch them closely to see if any of the pair up on thier own.

Yeah i might try and get rid of the nest box and then put it back in in a couple of days because i really like the way they are paired up at the moment

I got impatient and put i back after four days

That sounds like something that i would do lol

I have 8 pairs at the moment and out of 15 chicks I have lost 3 (I put this down to cold weather) I am cabinet breeding.

It's been cold over here at the moment also... I have three nests of chicks at the moment with 15 young and about 5 out of 7 cabinets with eggs, others yet to lay

It’s little warmer here than Sydney, but I had trouble the last few months getting some to go down, but of late they are all going down really well & some of the ones that I had together for months have now got eggs, but some of them I did what Maesie suggests, I split them up & paired them with others & that has worked really good. I had a pair of BES [black Eyed Self’s] that I bought who had been together for months in the breeding cabinet, I thought I had once again bought a useless pair, but as soon as I split them up & mated them with other birds, they both now have their mates on eggs. Maybe some birds just don’t like whom we first pair them with. But if your pair are feeding each other etc that shouldn’t be the problem.

Thanks guys i am getting confused i think i might leave them for another week or so if nothing happens then i will split them up i think it might be because of the fact that some of the pairs were pulled from the open aviary and now they are getting used to being confined? well see it sounds like all of your birds are going great wish me luck  and i will give you updates when i get any???? it is a job that you need alot of patience for!

i was wondering if it could be something in your setup that is preventing them from breeding like the position of the perches and nestbox. do you have a photo of your cabinets?

i can get some later it takes me forever to upload them so i will try when the baby is asleep

Good point Deb. It's important to have two perches parallel... so they can fly(or jump) from perch to perch... Kind of like when you were a child and you liked a boy/girl... you used to follow them around the playground :P It's kind of like their 'warm up', or foreplay (if I'm aloud to say that here)

I did take the photos but i didnt get the chance to upload them i do have the perches set up parallel and my set up is the same as my breeders so i think it might just be the birds not being ready or something? I went out today and they have been in the boxes because there is poo and feathers in there so atleast they go in there when im not there i will just watch them and see

If they are showing interest, that is a good sign. It would be a pity if you had to split up your pairings.

Have your birds done much breeding this year already??? Perhaps they are taking time out for a break :P

I have 4 pairs going at the moment all 4 have eggs and 1 has 3 new borns
