Can i breed my budgies now. They have had one clutch last winter. a

nd the four babies grew up fine. is it unhealthy to breed them in winter?

I have one pair breeding now. Many members breed through out the year. As long as it doesn't get too cold, they should be fine. Also, if you breed last year and all went well, go for it.

If they are in great condition and they are not being kept in a cold place they should be fine. Chicks that hatch in an aviary in winter can often die if the parents dont notice them hatch through the night and keep them warm. But if your conditions are right it should be okay

okay. i was planning on buying some more budgies soon. i was fixing my aviary yesterday and moved my only pair to a small cage. while i was hammering away on the new aviary my beautiful white budgie flew right past my head. and onto the fence. i spent half an hour trying to catch it but did not succeed. so unfortunatley, the pair i was going to breed has no dad. So it looks like no breeding for them. Which is a masive shame because i lossed another budgie last week after a butcher bird had scared it to death. so now im down to 1. I will buy her a mate in the next week and maybe a few more pairs, the only place i can get them from is pet shops. but boy i will never trust a pet shop again after when i got my hen (the only one a have left) wings clipped, and they have never grown back, so they must have cut the feathers into the veins or something? stopping the growth? so she is flighless. That pet shop has moved somewhere else now. any way, i'll have a look at the birds in other pet shops in town and i'll see if there is anything i like. Hopefully i will get a good looking boy for this well deserved hen!:hap:

Where in Melbourne are you? I have some young adult aviary birds for sale at the moment pretty cheap.

It a good way for a petshop to sell a french moult budgie by saying its wings are clipped when it actually has no flight feathers. I would suggest that bird was a french moult budgie not a clipped budgie.

Exactly my thoughts Kaz, they can’t cut the feathers so that they don’t grow back unless they cut some of the wing it’s self off.

Dont trust what the pet shops tell you. The best way is to buy from breeders. If they ring their birds you can get a full history(date hacthed, if it is hidding any recesive traits etc) of the bird you are buying, in the majority of cases you can even view parents and sibbllings.

tottaly agree with Ikon on that one mate ..... I have a few pairs going now and we are almost in winter once these hatch more then likly they will have a second round but i will defer this until after winter as this year its gonna be a really cold one and the chick have a less % of survial ......

 

Get your self set up and prepared for breeding ( if you really want to breed now) i suggest that you do it inside)
