Posted May 21, 200817 yr Good Evening All, Here is a question that has had me stumped for the past 2 days ..... I went and check the Hens eggs ... ( not all good mostly Unfertile : ( ) But one took me for a suprise I candle them and just put them back in however this one made a noise like a rock was in side of it .... I checked it out there was no hole or anything I came out of the avairy and it cracked in my hand ???? The YOLK WAS ROCK SOILDED .... Not one bit of wetness at all ....... It has been getting very cold lately ( tonight it is now 10oC ) could the hen have sat that tightly and cooked it ?? I know it seems like a stupid question But I have another one for you: Another hen that has 1 infertile egg ( so far) doesn't have a yolk in it instead (when candled) it has 5 -8 little tiny bubbles kinds like fish eggs caviar (sp) But they are clear ??? Your thought please
May 21, 200817 yr No a hen can’t cook her eggs Neat? How long had she been sitting on them? As usually a yolk will take some time to dry up like that, unless of course there was a real small hole in it that you can’t see. Or maybe seeing it was so brittle maybe the shell was so thin that it had dried out through it. I have seen this before but usually it takes some time to occur & of course I think it has to be an infertile egg otherwise it just goes rotten [addled]. I can’t say I’ve every seen the other example that you explain, probably it’s just a fault, as sometimes hens have internal problems & you get misshapen eggs & small or over large, so occasionally strange things just happen.
May 21, 200817 yr I have had hard yolks in eggs also Neat but have always found the tiniest hole in the egg to explain it.
May 22, 200817 yr Author Thanks Norm and Denise, a small hole would explain everything aswell as the shell being so porous (sp) - The egg was only 10 days old ..... The other egg? .... I am checking on it in another 3 days to see if there is any different changes ..
May 22, 200817 yr I agree about the hole. I hope you get some fertile eggs soon. I don't breed this time of year... too cold for me, so i use the cold months to rest my birds ready for spring. Could the hen be having trouble keeping the eggs warm enough for them to develop????
