First Cabinet Breeding

Featured Replies

Last week i moved B1 and B2 to a breeding cabinet because she was trying to make a nest in her quarintine cage. She has finally decided to lay a egg today after spending the last few days playing in the nestbox.B1 and B2 are both living in the nestbox and only coming out to feed. Now she has laid a egg i was wondering what will be the outcome. She is a df spangle and he is a skyblue violet spangle.

i am very excited and i am eagerly waiting to see if she will lay another egg but can anyone tell me what type the babies might be.

You will get mainly Spangles Deb & DF Spangles, but you don’t tell us what colour your DF Spangle is, is it White or Yellow? If it’s white you will get all Blue series, If Yellow all Green series unless it’s split for Blue. Good luck with them.

She is a white spangle.

So all Blue Deb, like I said, whether you get any Violets I think will depend on whether the DF has any Dark Factors.

Thanks Norm, hopefully i will get at least one df spangle from the babies. She is constantly in the nesting box so would that mean the first egg will hatch in 18 days instead of 20 if it is fertile.

Hey Deb, My Hen started sitting on her first egg after it was laid it hatched 18 days after it was laid then the 2nd egg hatched 3 days later not 2 days like it is commonly known ....

I usually Mark the 18th day on a calendar and check twice a day from that day on and then mark again when it was hatched ......

Should be Deb, but don’t panic if it takes a day or so long.

i was fortunate that i got this pair 3 weeks ago and they where already bonded so when i put them in a breeding cabinet it only took a week before she laid a egg.i hope your pairs start showing interest in each other soon.

Congrats on your eggs Deb

I have 3 more pairs down too. One was brought in from the aviary with her mate and 6 eggs and she has been sitting ever since, but she only had one baby out of her last six, so I'm not sure how fertile she is. The other two are new boys with hens I have already bred from and these hens love to breed. My lutino has been in and out of the box for the last week, but I only just noticed a little flirting with her fella this morning. The other pair I just put down yesterday and she is already investigating the box too. These are girls I had originally when I started breeding and they just had small types to breed with. I have put them with slightly bigger "nicer" cocks this time, so fingers crossed. I guess these two pair are my first "selective" breeding :)

it has been three days since she laid her last egg so it looks like i will be not getting anymore eggs. She has taken to sitting on the eggs all the time and the male is going in feeding and sitting with her. They are a cute pair.I got some photos of the eggs today when she finally go off them for a while.

This is B1 and B2, she is only a small hen so ia m wondering if that is why she only laid 3.

She is small, or is he just big? :D My hen has 8... I'd be happy to post some of my excess up to you if you like!!! :( . Good luck with them, and I hope they are all fertile. If they are named B1 and B2, if all three eggs hatch, you could call them Amy, Lulu and Morgan (after the three Teddy Bears on the TV show :D )

i will keep those names in mind and they will be good if i get 2 girls and i boy but if not i will have some males with identity issues.

:( True... you don't want to confuse them at such a young age, or push any alternative lifestyle choices onto them :D

I got a big surprise today, i have 4 eggs. The 3rd egg was laid on sunday so when i did not get a egg on Tuesday i thought that was the end of her laying. I have been out this morning and check her when i got home and there is 4 eggs. Has anyone else had eggs laid 4 days apart before.
