Posted May 20, 200816 yr um sort of of topic but my 1 of my female budgies attacked a pair that had kids in my avery but the weird thing is when i went and rescued the injured parents and the kids that were still alive i also noticed 5 of my male budgies, whom have familys of their own, were also covered in blood like they had went in to protect the family that was under attack. is that normal at all????

June 6, 200816 yr Colony breeding isn't working for you i'd say ... there's either too many birds or too little boxes... you have to be extremly careful or you'll lose everyone. I don't imagine they got in to protect, but i'm sure they got caught in it some how, whether that was bleeding females falling onto them or whether they and their partner tried to suss out the box where the injured birds were nesting, who knows... Either way you may want to reconsider your set up.
June 6, 200816 yr I would say the first thing to do would be to take out all the nest boxes as this is what will be getting that hen all silly. Then assess your options after that
June 6, 200816 yr Colony breeding, especially if you have too many birds in too small a space and nesting boxes too....is a recipe for disaster. Unlkess you can watch them and change things around 24 hrs of the day it wont work. Size of aviary is critical, how many birds in that space, how many nesting boxes, how closely the nestboxes are to each other, etc. The male birds would have attacked already bloodied and damaged babies if they had been flung from the nest. Budgies dont usually recue, if others are attacking they usually join in...unfortunate but true
June 6, 200816 yr It doesn't happen often since mostly they all gang up and pick on the weak or injured ones, but yes, once I did have the one noble male budgie that tried to rescue his daughter from her vicious mother. Unfortunately, she damaged her daughter so much that I had no option but to euthanase the daughter as she was dying anyway. The vicious mother also turned against the noble father budgie and attacked him too as he tried to intervene. I saw this happen, but was too late to prevent the damage, it happened so quickly. The male survived and recovered, and has since reproduced with a nice gentle hen. The vicious hen was sold as a pet with a strict warning not to breed with her. I have noticed some of my male birds also share egg incubating duties with the hens, so the hens can go out, feed and preen themselves.
June 6, 200816 yr Funny you bring that up DrNat I checked a nest today and found both cock and hen lying down in there... I proceeded to get them out the box and discovered why they were like this... The cock was on 4 eggs and the hen on two hahaha I had a good laugh. i thought it was really cute KAZ it's that cinnamon wing violet cock I bought of you hehe

Then assess your options after that No MB - Take out the Hen that is causing the fights to take out the nestboxes disturbs the nesting pairs and their babies will be neglected !!!!
June 6, 200816 yr Um, I actually missed the part about the other males having families, I assumed the other boxes were empty. I agree Neat
