Posted May 20, 200817 yr Hi guys, I have taken your advise and have brought cabinets and paired my birds up i have 10 set ups going at the moment and was just wondering how long in your opinion to leave them in there for? So if they havent gone in the box or shown a liking too each other when should i remove them and try a different pair? is it common for some birds not to like each other?
May 20, 200817 yr I leave mine for about 3 weeks maximum. If there's no signs I give up and remove them.
May 20, 200817 yr I agree with Libby, although I have never had a pair that didnt think it was a good idea once seperated into a breeding cabinet.
May 21, 200817 yr Author Good news i have 3 pairs going in and out of the nest box does this usually make the other birds get into the groove too? I hope so. Oh and i have just gone out the back to check on them and one of the "hens" now has a half bright blue cere and half brown crusty i am guessing that it is a male oops i nearly made them gay sorry birdies!

May 21, 200817 yr Three weeks is what I do although if the Hen starts attacking the cock it's usually about three minutes.

Males dont get brown crusty ceres...sounds like a hen who is out of breeding condition. Post a picture.
May 25, 200817 yr Author okay i havent had much success with the cabinets i still have 2 birds going in and out of the cages but the others are not showing interest even with brown crusty ceres i will probably swap them around in the next couple of days and see if that works and gets them moving? Has anyone had this much trouble with cabinets before? Some of the hens have laid before so i thought they would get straight into it im stumped?
May 25, 200817 yr I have a theory, whether it’s true or not, I don’t know. I think that some of the pairs that at first take a long time to go down in cabinets, could be birds that were bred in the colony method & that birds that have been reared in cabinets seem more to know what it’s all about once they are placed in one. If your birds have been used to colony breeding I would just be a little more patient with them, they will get the idea in time.

Yeah that does make sense i have a few new pairs in there and im not sure how they were breed before s i might jst leave them all a little bit longer how long is too long though?
