Posted May 19, 200817 yr I don't know much about Budgies, but I bought two, and built a big cage, and thought I would try to breed them. Well it worked and now they just don't stop laying eggs or having babies. I give them multivitamin blocks, and vitamized water and spray millet and cuttle bones, constantly but am just wondering if I should stop them?? She has layed 5 batches this year I think jeez 5-7 eggs each time......Can they be fed enough and given good enough nutrients to keep this up?? I keep just giving the birds away. Will it kill the female??
May 19, 200817 yr The hen needs a break or the hen is going to end up getting sick and breed herself to death. I am no expert but do you still have a nesting box in there? What have you done to the eggs once she starts her clutch again? There are many different things you can do like addle the eggs, replace them with fake ones etc...to work on stopping the hen from laying...I know others with more expertise will come and advise too. If you don't provide the correct circumstance they will "usually" stop laying on their own but it sounds like you let her keep lay and letting the eggs hatch...
May 19, 200817 yr Some very strong healthy birds will have multiple batches with no ill effects, as seems the case with your birds. Others will breed themselves to death if not stopped. In most cases we recommend that they mostly be given two batches, then rested. It can often be difficult to stop some pairs as you have learnt. The simplest way is as soon as one batch is completed & the young leave the nest, is to remove either the nest box or move them to another cage. This will mean you will probably have to destroy some eggs, as often they have already at least a couple of eggs, before the last baby leaves the nest. Another method is to remove the hen when the young are almost leaving the nest before she lays & leave the cock bird to finish the job by himself, but you need to keep an eye on him, as some cocks are better than others in doing that. In nature they breed while good conditions are available & stop when these conditions stop, but in the aviary where we are feeding good food all the time, we need to control them to suite our situation.
May 19, 200817 yr I dont mean to sound harsh, but before you started to breed your budgies, you should have read up on how to look after your birds and you would have learnt that it highly recommended to only breed them twice a year. You should never let them continually breed like you have done. I'm suprised your hen hasnt died!! You cant just buy a pair of budgies, stick them in a cage with a nest box and let them go for it. If I was you I would take the nest box out NOW and let them have a rest - a LONG rest!
May 19, 200817 yr I agree with Norm and Elly. Give her a rest. The nest box is the problem. Budgies breed like rabbits when there is ANY nesting site available.
