Why Are You Breeding

I saw a similar topic to this on another site and thought it would be an interesting one for here.

Why are you breeding budgerigars?

My answer is:

I have only just started but my purpose in breeding to to establish a stud of quality showbirds that are capable of and may win local and national show titles.

Not only that it brings me great joy to just sit and watch the birds and also to see the outcomes of breeding pairings.

Great topic!

I am an occasional breeder. I breed to re-stock my avairy, therefor I don't do it often, select my pairs carefully and keep all babies

I breed out of a general interest in genetics and I guess I'm also kind of using my budgies as practise for when I start looking at other species that are more difficult to keep and breed. I like to experiment on them with different food types and discover their likes and dislikes. I only breed a few birds at any one time and all babies are either kept or put into carefully chosen private homes, no pet shops.

Why do I breed budgerigars?

Because I love them and want to find new colours and varieties to exhibit and I believe that they develop with their experience of life just as I do, and they talk. I enjoy the learning and the social life it gives me.

I just have to trust that my surplus budgerigars will be looked after by people who can give them more individual specialised care and attention for their development than I can.

I breed because I love budgies and I enjoy their company. I have been around budgies and budgie breeding since my very early days. It is one passion that has stayed with me all this time! I love to see what colours and types will pop out of thoes little white eggs. I love to watch what each bird grows up to be, and i love to admire their individuality and character! They are not 'just birds' as some may put it; they are all truly unique and special

I don't sell many birds, I want to keep them ALL hehe!!

I breed because i enjoy seeing the beautiful mutations and birds you can produce along with providing me hours of entertainment of just sitting out there watching them. For all those who don't get kept, from a young age i will tame them up so they can become good pets  Even if they're not the "prettiest" things out i know they go on to bigger and better things!

Just the thrill and excitment of breeding these birds is what does it, the ones who get re-homed to excited kids or as a little old lady's companion is an added bonus.

why do i breed, well I breed for a number of reasons ....

Curiosity: I wanted to experience what it was like and got hooked

The genectic side of breeding : Creating, and seeing the difference types of mutations - and understanding it

Pleasure: Of watching my and hearing them,

Getting Back what I put in: Seeing the faces of family members that can interact with their new family member is priceless - Especailly the kids ... Dylan & Talia Love to give the birds ( hand tame )kisses

Bliss: Seeing the whole cycle of breeding is amazing, Hens turn their eggs and they know which one needs turning which one needs more warmth which ones are no good - How great the Cocks are at their fatherly chores - feeding the hen, knowning which seeds and etc they need more off - when you look at it like this and feel the way I do about it it's unbelievable - I can't put my feelings into words but this was pretty close to it ........

I breed my budgies for many reason also.

The thrill of new life in a nest.

The excitement of colours emerging in a constantly surprising array of colour and type.

To select the best of my breeding program and progressively "improve" the types and standard that I keep.

To enable me to sell or rehome some of my babies to allow the introduction of new blood, new purchases....and in that way avoid interbreeding with bloodlines too closely related.

I have pride in my colourful rainbow of birds in the aviary and they make me happy.....and making them as happy as they can be also makes me happy.

I just love them, it seems I love all natural things from the time I was born, my Mum said I was always catching things in bottles, ants etc & she said for some reason I never got bitten…that didn’t last…wish it were true sometimes…maybe I wanted to learn about the birds & bees, as I have kept birds from 7 & from 21 bees, all my life. I often have thought maybe I was a bird in a former life. The Native Americans believe every one has a power animal, I think Australian Aborigines have a similar idea.

My Grandparents on my Fathers side gave me a Canary for my 7th birthday, I used to feed it, but Mum had to put the cage up on nail in the wall as I couldn’t reach it & one day a cat got it, the next year my Grandparents gave me four Budgies in a large wire cage, then it was off I bred my first Budgie a Normal Green in an old Kraft cheese box. I use to make my own breeding cabinets from wooden fruit cases I got from the local Green grocer, something that couldn’t be done these days as fruit comes in cardboard or foam boxes.

I love breeding things as each new individual has the ability to be something new & special, same as our own kids. I also love genetics & it seemed to somehow have rubbed off, as my Eldest Daughter is now a Geneticist & works at a laboratory at RPA hospital. As well as enjoying different & rare mutations, I am always hoping to breed all the time better birds, not especially for showing, but just healthier better looking birds [at least to me] than before I got them. It’s more important to me, that they have high hatchability & can raise their own young without too much help & survive long & healthy lives.

A question that I have asked myself. I breed because when I see the busgies being benched for judging I think to myself Why cant I breed birds like this and the answer is I can, Just may take a bit of time. So thats the excitment for me.

i breed them as a hobby enjoying what possibilities of colours i could get. my step-daughter knows her colours ( she nearly 7) and loves watching the babies grow. i think bird breeding is also in my blood.
