Posted May 17, 200817 yr When we move I want to have BIG aviaries. The problem is there aren't really any aviary builders that make them the size I want. So I have come up with a couple of ideas. 1. A frame from a greenhouse with a covered end, a mouse guard and a wire end. 2. 2 carcCarports with 1 1/2 sides covered in, a mouse guard and the rest wire 3. Large sheds with large wire inserts in the walls. Any thoughts/suggestions? My worry with the shed idea is that it would be more prone to heating up.
May 17, 200817 yr If you want to do a custom aviary then go the way Daz did his in this thread. http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=12409 The concept is there and if you want it larger then just do it larger. I visited a breeder last weekend who had a similar setup to Daz inside a prefab garage. This one wasn't insulated as Daz has. Where the roller door was he had a frame with bird mesh and had his flights similar to what Daz has done were partitioned off inside. The roller door was still in place and in real bad weather he could pull it down. Half of the garage was flights and the other half was the breeding room. If I was you I would go and visit either a Garage manufacturer or possibly a steel frame home manufacturer and tell them what you are looking for and see what ideas they come up with.. Also if you do a search on Google for "Large Aviaries" you will also find some ideas. Cheers. Derek
May 17, 200817 yr Author That looks great Derek but not really what I am thinking. I don't want a breeder setup I just want large flight aviaries to house birds from finches all the way up to cockies. There will be between 5 and ten aviaries in total, to allow me to seperate species, set out on a semi-circle and with as much wire as possible facing into the centre of the circle (where there will be a picnic table, etc.)....full flight size of each aviary will be atleast as large as your average two car garage
May 17, 200817 yr Just a couple of idea, I would suggest you have the roof area all covered, as even though they like the rain to bathe in, any moisture in the aviaries is asking for trouble in my opinion [disease & parasites]. And have an area on the sides, from the ground up almost a metre of tin so that mice can’t climb up & get through the wire & make sure they can’t get in any other way, otherwise they will drive you mad. I tried to make mine mice & snake proof, but still have some trouble. I think some of Derek's ideas are good too, plenty of protection, but lots of fresh air when you want it.
May 17, 200817 yr Author The covered area on the sides to keep mice out is what I mean by a 'mouse guard' Norm, I think that will be essential. The carport and large shed ideas would essentially have the roof all covered the greenhouse idea would be more difficult to put a roof on due to the shape.
May 17, 200817 yr That narrows it down more MB. Have a look at this site http://aussiecagesandaviaries.com/Modular%20aviaries.htm They are located at Tamworth in New South Wales but will build anything you want and send their products all over Australia. Here is another one located in Queensland http://www.custombuiltaviaries.com.au/3.html It isn't the best website in the world but keep going through all the links and you will see that they make a very good product.
May 17, 200817 yr I was thinking you were talking about just Budgies; things will be different if you are keeping lots of different types. Some finches are good in planted aviaries & mostly they have open flights to water the plants, best to not have too many birds to each cage & you would have to treat for worms etc. With some of the larger parrots etc people often put wire bases in the flights to stop the birds connecting with the ground, also suspended aviaries, if you know what they are…looks like plans to spend lots of money…
May 17, 200817 yr Author We are buying ten or twenty acres in the country just so I can have my aviaries Won't be immense numbers of birds, the main idea of having 5-10 is so that different species can be seperated, there will probably be one with finches in it, one for budgies and tiels, etc, one for small neophemas(torquoise parrots, red rumps, etc) and then a few for larger species like galahs(my personal favorite), cockies, kings, etc. One of the aviaries will probably be segmented into smaller breeding cages incase I want to breed them. OH and I have also talked about building the aviaries with removable dividers so that I can adjust them to any size I like! In a seperate area of the roperty we will also be installing a quarantine area.
May 17, 200817 yr WOW!!!!!! I'm so jelous!!! Love it. Um... I'll put my two bobs worth in. For ease of building, roofing, diver-ing :hap: I'd have two rows facing each other with an inclosed corridor in the middle (like in primary school where you'd walk down the hall way and you'd have classrooms off either side. Then you could have a series of dividers you could adjust to make the individual avairies smaller or bigger. At one end of the corridor you could have your entry door, at the other end it could lead into a bird room for your supplies etc... as to building it. You could go around to all the shed/avairy suppliers once you have an idea and get them all to quote you, you could also approach some builders, to get that take on things. I can visualise those big long sheds like they have for farm machinery... and you could get them to reduce the height and add wire where you want it. I have found those places very willing to accomidate almost anything. I would say that shed's do heat up unless you prefab them, or if money wasn't an issue have big roller doors to allow for massive air flow and attached a wire bit so when you roll up the door, the wire is there to stop them getting out (kinda like the screen doors we have on homes) Lastly... Feel free to build an extra room for me... I'm already packed and waiting!!!
May 17, 200817 yr Author It will be a big bush block hopefully Maesie, campers will be welcome The area in the centre of the circle of aviaries I want open air so that we can have a barbie there and a picnic table, etc.

I'd be approaching place with sketch and ideas in hand... see what they can do for you!
May 17, 200817 yr Author okay, to make it clearer hopefully, this is basically the layout with table and chaird in the centre and one corner left open for access
