My First Show Budgies

Featured Replies

Posted

i went to see the breeder that Jenene told me about today who was having to sell some of his show budgies due to health issues and i came home with 4 beautiful birds. i am very happy because these are my first show budgies.i got 2 females, one is a grey opaline and the other a cinnamon wing opaline. i also got 2 males, one is a grey opaline and the other is a green opaline spangle. The green spangle is my favourite, the breeder said he took 4th place in a budgie show last year. now i need to work out which ones to pair together.

Nice looking birds Deb, should breed some nice chicks from them, I agree with you the Green is a really nice bird & I like that Cinnamon hen too, they’re my favourites.

Should be plenty of show competition later on with all these new show breeders coming on line.

Very nice budgies Deb! I'm glad I was able to help you!! There's a bird sale at Cessnock next Saturday if you are interested, I'm definately going!!

Problem is the money i spend on birds comes out of the money i am saving to build my new aviary so if i keep buying new budgies i will never get my aviary finished.

The problems also Deb, is you got those nice birds at a pretty good price, I think I read somewhere, so if you were going to buy more birds it would have probably been better from him, as they probably wont be that cheap at the sale.

Also I always try & tell myself, that with a few good birds, if they breed okay, it don’t take long to get numbers up & then you have first choice of them which ones you can keep, whereas sold birds are what others don’t want to keep, so your at a disadvantage straight away. And we are all limited by the numbers we can keep, by how many aviaries we have or the cost of food. I think I have stopped basically buying birds & it will only be very special birds for specific purposes from now on, I think if I can’t breed some good birds from what I already have, things are bad.

i did get them for a good price. i paid $10 each for the greys and $30 for the green but i do not want to crowd the avairy i have so i think i should hurry up and get another avairy built and put a hold on budgie buying.they are good birds he was selling, he has to go to hospital and will be out of action for 3 months so he does not want to many birds for his wife to look after.

hey my name is joel i breed english (show) budgies only and im breeding as many excellent budgies as possible to show nexy year now my opinion i would pair the light green spangle with the hen cinnamon opaline and the grey opaline hen with the grey cock and you should breed some allright birds out of that !

If you are breeding for show,I would'nt breed any of them together. The spangles will be to washed out, because of the

cinnamon, Opaline X Opaline, may lose the clear at the V on the back of the neck,Use good normals if possable.

i do love opalines but can i breed a opaline x oplaine or will the result give a not defined v pattern. can i breed anyone of these birds together to give me nice show quality looking birds or should i look for normals to breed with them. i do not intend upon showing budgies till my kids are older but i would like to learn about them.

And what's wrong with loving Opalines…I certainly do. You certainly can mate Opaline to Opaline Deb; in fact I think breeders use Opalines to increase the size of other Mutations. It's okay to mate them, mostly the only Mutations they don't recommend breeding like to like is some of the Recessives & Albion or Lutinos. As in their case it's better to breed two splits together or a split to the Mutation you want. Of course you can breed even Opalines to Normal if you think they will be improved by that. The main thing would be to try not to breed two birds together that show the same fault if at all possible. Like you mention if you have a bird that has markings in the V area, try to mate it to a bird that is clear in that area. The same goes for excess head markings too, like flecks.

What JoE, recommend sounds as good as any, as long as you know that the two Greys are not too closely related. All them apart from the Green Spangle have some pattern in their V & he may have that in his genetics, as this show fault seems to be very strong in lines of British Budgie, from what I can see. Of course if you haven't got birds with very clear V's or any other fault you have to just mate what you have & mostly you will have variation in the chicks & it's up to you to keep selecting birds that you later pair with the least amount of the undesired fault, that's part of the joy of breeding, using your talents to improve your strain…Good Luck Deb.

Whatever you do your going to end up with a lot of Greys from those four birds, do you have any other Opalines Deb?

the only other opaline i have is a pet type, these are my only show budgies. i know that none of them are related. the green spangle's mother was a blue opaline spangle and the father was light green normal so if i breed him with the opaline grey hen whose parents where a normal grey and oplaine grey what would be the results.

Generally most breeders do not breed opaline to opaline as opalines tend to increase markings. So you may get heavily flecked birds ( a trait of opalines ) and you may get heavier markings through the back as well. The traditional way to breed opalines is to a clean headed normal ( not flecked on the head ).
