Laverne,what Colour Is She?

I am just wondering what colour you would say Laverne is, Dave told me she is a cinnamon wing opaline but i cannot remember what colour he said she was. i love her colours because she is different to all my other budgies, i have sky blues but she does not look like them.i am just wanting to know her colour so i can look at what other budgie i would need to purchase to pair with her when she is older.

yf cinnwing opaline cobalt/violet :)

Cinnamon always gives the blues a violet look to them

I agree with libby she is beautiful ...(budgie of the month submission coughs.....lol)

Thanks, i did not realise that cinnamon changes their blue colouring, if i wanted opaline babies i would have to get a male opaline, i am still trying to work out the sex linked genes.

i have already submitted her photo to budgie of the month, i think she is gorgeous.

Either a visual opaline or a split opaline would get you opaline bubs

Do you have any cocks in your aviary who's mums were opaline? they'll be definate splits if so :)

ooOOoo sebby the fallow!!! put her genes to good use then Deb !!!

i do want to breed with her and i love her colours but i do not know enough about genetics to work out what would be a good male for her. none of my males are split for opaline or opaline, they are spangles so i think i will need to purchase some more males.

Just let someone who can work it out for you know what you're chasing from the babies. That way they can tell you if it's possible and what's the best candidate for the pairing

Thanks Libby, i know i want opalines and if she is carrying violet than violet opalines would be nice but i do not know anything about fallows or goldenfaces so how do those genes fit in. will all her babies be goldenface no matter who i pair her with.

I have a theory Deb which I am going to test. I found some info that said that the spangle birds which show the body colour in their spangles instead of black(or cinnamon) are also carrying opaline. This has been supported in theory in my aviary by one of my blue spangles showing one or two 'opaline' type feathers poking through in between the spangles. I'm gonna see how it goes once I get my breeder boxes set up but you could always test the theory with a clutch and see how it goes.

that sounds interesting, can you post a picture of a spangle for me that you think is carrying opaline, my new spangle has blue lines on his back instead of black.i might post a picture of him and see if anyone can tell me what it means.

if she's paired to a non-goldenface then only 50% of her babies will get it  If paired to a goldenface/yellowface then the percentage will rise ( i personally would say she's a Yf as the colours not that intense)fallow has to be bred to another bird split for or showing the gene to get any visuals from it and opaline you already know you need a cock carrying it ;)Help :) ???

sounds like an opaline spangle Deb :) Show us a picture Although i've never heard of this showing one or two feathers to be carrying opaline as that could only apply to cocks if it were true as hens can't be split

I am so glad you asked what color she was as I bought one exactly like this on the weekend and was struggle on blue or violet. Thanks deb

sorry but another genetic question, her father was recessive pied so if i paired her to a recessive pied would there be a chance of the babies being pied.

Yes, with her father being recessive pied that makes her automatically split :D

Pairing to a recessive cock could very likely give some recessive pied offspring :P

Here is my cock that I believe to be opaline spangle. I get the same sort of colouring in my females although this is the first time these rogue feathers have popped up in the mix. I'm going to put this guy to a normal female and see if I get opaline hens out of them. Excuse the moult face :D

And here's the back view, sorry he wouldn't sit still so it's not great. Note the black feathers on the top inner edge of the wing

i see what you mean, he is beautiful. i would love to see the results of your theory when you breed him. i am thinking of pairing Laverne with my cobalt recessive pied when she gets older, hopefully i might get one violet recessive pied out of the pairing.

Just to add a small amount of strength to my theory also. I recently bred a regular spangle hen to a "opaline" spangle male(ie. he has the blue spangles), out of the three chicks the only hen was the only one that inherited this blue spangle marking. Which would make sense if the cock was carrying it but not the hen :) This same pair are currently about to hatch their second round so we will see what we get this time around :)
