Posted May 4, 200817 yr What are all natural plant types are good and can be given to birds for chewing
May 4, 200817 yr Karthik is in India Daz It would be best to stick with the tried and true vegies and fruit unless someone you know is already feeding something to their birds.
May 7, 200817 yr Author Sorry I think I haven't posted my initial post correctly. Actually what I was looking for is list of safe natural soft woods which can be given to our birds for chewing and shredding purpose.
May 7, 200817 yr It’s hard for us in Australia to advise you Karthik, as most of the plants available here wont be available in India. You may have some gum trees growing there {Eucalypts] but they may not be easy for you to find. Some people give them Hibiscus which you may be able to find.
May 7, 200817 yr Karthik if you can tell me what types of trees you have in your area I might be able to advise a little bit. I have a double major in Botany at uni so I might be able to find some info for you.
May 7, 200817 yr Karthik, check out the post about Jacaranda trees from Rah, I ust posted a list of bird safe plants including some trees. Some may be accessible in your area.
May 8, 200817 yr Author Thanks Norm and MB. Yes, Eucalyptus and Hibiscus plants are available in my area. So just by placing a small piece of eucalyptus tree without removing bark is sufficient or how do we give this to birds for chewing or shredding purpose. Good to hear MB that you are double major in Botany.....in addition to eucalyptus and hibiscus, we have Mango, Guava, palm, coconut, tamarin, amala, banyan, drumstick, jack, and couple of other plants/trees for which I don't know the names. MB will check the other post you have mentioned.
May 8, 200817 yr They will enjoy tearing the bark off and chewing the leaves and have a great time. I just break small branches off and change them every couple of days.
May 8, 200817 yr You will find if you do a search in the FAQ's it has links to lists of safe and unsafe plants etc... This will help you, as will most of the information in the FAQ's. I find them to be very usefull and I refer to the information on a regular basis.
