Posted May 4, 200817 yr I have read in some article that square perches are recommended, but personally I am curious to know why not round/circular perches, since in nature we have round perches not square. So wanted to know what is the best type of wooden perches and what should be its dimensions. Thanks, Karthik
May 5, 200817 yr in my aviary i use natural branch's as perches. the branch's are all differrent sizes giving the birds feet great exercise
May 5, 200817 yr The round perches they are talking about are the regular dowel perches because they have no knots, different types of twists and turns and widths to exercise their feet, birds that have these type of perches only can get what is known as bumblefoot. Round perches that are natural like branches from the store or the safe wood not treated in your backyard is perfect because that is what they stand on all day in the wild. I hope that clears up that round is not bad it is the type of round we are talking about.
May 5, 200817 yr Tree branches are best Karthik, just make sure that any you use are safe for budgies if they chew on them, not sure what they can eat in the way of branches over your side of the world
May 6, 200817 yr Yes tree branches are better. But I use two different perches in the breeding cages. one round 16mm and other 19 mm square with rounded edges.
May 7, 200817 yr Author Thanks to everyone responses. The round perches they are talking about are the regular dowel perches because they have no knots, different types of twists and turns and widths to exercise their feet, birds that have these type of perches only can get what is known as bumblefoot. So if my understanding is correct, then plain round wooden perches of different diameters are good to use. Do we any home remedy for bumblefoot. Yes tree branches are better. But I use two different perches in the breeding cages. one round 16mm and other 19 mm square with rounded edges. Just curious to know is there any specific reason behind using a square perch in combination to round perches.
May 7, 200817 yr If you must use dowel perches then it would be advisable to have them in atleats two different sizes. I would imagine the square theory is the same- to excercise their feet. I would still advise natural branches if possible though.
May 8, 200817 yr No... the SQUARE perches in Breeding cages are to assist is the mating. They provide better grip for the hen, and when the cock is on top of her it can sometimes be hard for her to hold on and stay on the perch. Square perches help greatly with this :hap: ... better grip= eaiser mating=better success rate= very :hap: breeders!!!
May 8, 200817 yr I use two size dowel in my aviary as well. 16 mm & 19 mm. These are made from Tassie Oak. However I did notice that the Moizer's in their book "Budgerigars, The Complete Guide" recommend square perches made from 2" x 1" or 5 cm x 2.5 cm. Interesting how different folks do things differently.
May 8, 200817 yr Never knew that, thanks Maesie :hap: , you learn something new every day No worries :hap: . I'm sure it would also help with their feet for exercise etc... but it's mainly for the mating. I learnt it from the wise members here too!!!
May 9, 200817 yr Author Thanks to everyone. Regarding natural branches, do we have to remove the bark from the branches or as it is we can place it in the cage.
May 17, 200816 yr Author Thanks MB. Yes tree branches are better. But I use two different perches in the breeding cages. one round 16mm and other 19 mm square with rounded edges. I use two size dowel in my aviary as well. 16 mm & 19 mm. These are made from Tassie Oak. Wondering whether 16 mm and 19 mm is not big for Budgies feet, I was thinking best would be of 13mm or 0.5 inches square perches.
August 27, 200816 yr Hi. I have 1 square piece of dowel and 1 round piece on the breeding cages, the square piece is to help with budgies mating. Then in the avairy I have alot of gum treet branches, leave the bark and the leaves on as the birds will eat it and it is good for them.
