But with this amount of birds, do you mingle with them and are they friendly towards you?

I know when i when and picked up our bird, the bloke went into their cage and they were frightened of him (not in a bad way).

Walking into an aviary amongst the birds............and walking into an aviary with a net in hand evokes a different response. Birds recognise a net and get a bit more flightly knowing what it means.

Most of my birds get scared and move out of the way. I am a big guy, their response is no different to most people I come across :party0011:

 

There are a couple however who come up and say hello. I have a couple that land on me, some that will let me go right up to them, about an inch away before they move off.

 

None are as tame as coming to my hand and flying to me when I call.

Well, the big moult is drawing to a close. Those of you who have followed other thread on here know that is has been a season of gains and losses. New births, some sad deaths, some strange deaths and of course some rehomings, with more to come next month.

I thought I would try to keep a regular thread that showed my birds and some possible future pairings, so here goes.

 

Some pics to start with

 

Humprhey, my green bird is actually my first bird, and the one that started all of this. He bred with Milly earlier this year, but unfortunately all their young died. I thought i might try him again later. Here he is with a new potential partner in Athena

 

 

Pegasis once damaged her leg, and now her right foot cannot bend. It is still used to balance and support weight, just the tendon was severed so the foot cannot grasp things. She is a big budgie. (sorry, the flash bounced off the plastic walls that prevent drafts)

 

Oscar is definitely part of my breeding plans. He is a beautiful grey, and the bird he might end up with is this beautiful YF blue, who carried the violet gene.

 

Sebby and Cheese were great parents, but they have caused havoc in the aviary lately. They will remain a pair it seems. If Sebby does not have a red face from attacking other birds, it is green from spinach.

 

You know when you watch your birds, and they seem to shake out all the feathers, before they sit flat again? Ever imagine what it would look like if you got a photo in that middle stage? I would imagine something like this

Humphrey and Athena are at my sister's place, Pegasis is dead, Oscar has bred once, Aprhodite the YF is at my sister's, Sebby and Cheese were given away to a friend's family, and they have bred again since. Angel (the albino shaking it out at the end there) also went with Sebby and Cheese.

 

Read a whole thread though, look at the date at the top of the post (left of the middle) and comment on the recent stuff, not the really old stuff. Hang on, that is not fair, comment on what you want buddy, just make sure you look at the date first, then decide if you still want to comment. you may want to, it is your call.

 

In regard to all the birds, I do have a soft spot for Humphrey and I go talk to him every time I go to my sister's place. I do miss Sebby though. She was a little b@%ch who bit like anything, always wanted her own way, but she was great. I need to go see her again...soon. Might go for a drive in my new car tomorrow.

I put the birds in earlier as Quiche is going through a moult and I believe that he was stressing a bit in the smaller cage. The stress of moulting, travelling and the smaller cage means that he needed some open space.

 

He cannot fly too well as his flights are just growing back but he seems a lot happier in with a flock.

 

Joining Quiche is his new YF Blue Mate and the GreyGreen hen.

Now, I know they were only quarantined from a week, but they came from Kaz's aviary and Cec Gearing's aviary. I am not overly concerned about infection.

Time for a update. I will try to explain the pics as they come along as well.

 

The best bird I have bred - a grey clearflight pied hen. She should be split blue as well. (Her face is messy from eating fresh corn)

dave i understand what your saying about quarenteen

but what im explained is were not quarinteening the birds as they may be sick from where we get them

where quarinteening them as when birds get stressed from diffrent suroundings their amune becomes low as you know and they are way more subseptibale to any bugs our own flocks may carry and like it or not almost every aviry bird has megga in system and this being a secondey infection to other stress related illnesses eg parrasisiosus (what ever its called ) is also carryed un seen in alot of flights and only kicks in after stress full times eg breeding or moveing

so althoough you may be happy to not quarrentene your birds given where they came from

and i do understand that as i to have done this BUT I LOST TWO BIRDS within a month off receving them

i was told it is for the individual birds health more than the stud

as birds could carry ilness for up to 6 months a year longer with out fleair up

its times of stress that can cause it to reboot

i just wanted others to understand that

not having a go about your quarinteen procedures

were all diffrent

 

oh i forgot to say

your doing very well mate

birds are beautiful with some stand out to me

their are birds i dont quarenteen for more than two weeks and birds i do it depends on their stress leavals and my judgment of their vigoro

GB, I understand exactly what you are saying, and theoretically even the best breeders have birds that have the potential to introduce disease into any aviary.

 

You are also right about mega - it is a secondary infection that affects birds once their immune system is low due to something else. Most budgies in Australia are thought to carry mega as I understand, thus the non-exportation policy that currently exists. The secondary infection here is the key point. How do you avoid the onset of a secondary infection that all birds appear to have? Best method is to do everything to prevent the onset of the primary infection.

 

In this partcular case, stress is what is going to count as the primary infection. The new birds were isolated for only a week, they were examined for any signs of primary infection, droppings were normal. The stress from going from a large aviary to a small cage can really stress some birds out. We have recently see with a bird that Kaz had that was plucking its primary feathers that stress can have a massive effect on birds. My birds were really not setting in the smaller cage, constanly running and seeking to escape, what I would call dangerous flight attempts and general uneasiness they displayed.

 

Therefore I made the decision to introduce the birds to the larger aviary.

 

I am sorry for the loss of your birds, I have no idea the quality of the breeder you got them from. I know where mine came from. The aviary is impecable for its cleanliness and the quality of birds it produces. I have seen it with my own two eyes. The birds were not at a show, where they mixed with other birds. They came from one aviary to my place.

 

Quarantining is about ensuring the birds are healthy and not intriducing potential hazards to your flock. Mega is something that is in most budgies, so that is not being introdcued. No other illnesses were apparent or present that I could determine. The only way these birds were going to become sick is if they remained in a smaller cage, not an aviary, thus to avoid the secondary infection resulting from stress, they were put in the aviary.

 

You also state that a bird can carry illness for up to 6 months. How long do you want people to quarantine for?

 

Quarantine is to protect a flock from the unknown. When the unknown is known, the quarantine period is naturally shorter.

 

I know you say you are not having a go at my quarantine procedures however it does seem that your use of generic statements and theories about quarantine did not take into account specific factors that relate to this situation. I do appreciate the comments and the thought that you put into them, however I do think you have missed many of the major contributing factors that impacted and affected the decision I reached.

 

So everyone knows, the birds are doing well and all is good.

I think Quiche boarded the wrong flight Dave, shouldn't he have been on the Melbourne flight not Syndey

He is good, plump describes everyone in this house, some unfortunately are more plump than others -

 

He is still moulting, so the flights are only half way there and there are still a few feathers coming though - all over.He has an excellent head on him. I was trying to get a picture of him next to Caesar, but it never eventuated. Maybe in the future.

 

He was definitely on the right flight, make no mistake there.As for breeding him in the future, I think he can have his picture of the best hens that I have.
