March 25, 200916 yr Author Do you have a night light out there for them Dave ? One of those low voltage, not too bright lights ? Our aviary does and it is great for times like these. There is no way of running an electrical cable to where the aviary is, so therefore there is no night light. One problem I have is that when there is any light on them, even a torch shining in their direction, they chirp away happily. This means that in the middle of the night, if they get in a flap, and there is a light on for them to recover, they will chirp away with that light. I am conscious of neighbours and noise
March 25, 200916 yr I used to use solar powered garden lights attached to the outside wire of the aviary where they could get charged by the sun and come on at night providing a night light sort of condition. The light usually isnt enough to keep the birds chatting, but enough light to help them resettle after a disturbance.
March 29, 200916 yr Author New pics today of the less full aviary. Some birds are moulting, and some are looking more spectacular than ever before. Wilde - going through a moult Twitch going through a moult - note he has dropped a flight and the replacement is growing back well The blue hen I got from Libby - looking very good Humphrey - still king - size does not grant nobility Nibbler Moulting (blue) and 2 greys Caesar Moulting - a great birds can look poor in photos and when moulting Earl and his lady - I know that opaline to opaline and grey pairs are discouraged, but this is stilla possibility. They are insperable My Henry George Blue (HGB) wants a drink, but some grey bird is hogging the water dispenser. Waiting patiently The clearwings I bought from Nubbly5 in january My Cec Gearing Lute and Wilde sitting lower Boof and his buddy - for spangles, they have good spots. The usual suspects in a line-up Blu and either Dumb or Dumber Dumb and Dumber Dumb or Dumber face on - best shot of him I have ever taken. He has filled out so well. Dumb or Dumber looks so good he has earnt the right to be my new signature.
March 29, 200916 yr Looking great dave! I love Dumb and dumber they're beautiful and the grey opaline male!

May 13, 200915 yr Author Well, the tree behind the aviary $ being removed on Friday, so the aviary needed to be moved. All the birds were moved to holding cages, where the currently are. the garage is deafening at the moment. The aviary was moved for 4 men. We all picked up a corner and carried it to its current position. Damn that thing is heavy. The birds will be returned to the aviary for a few months, in it s new position, until my fences are done. Some pairs will go down to breed, and the new breeding room is going to be assembled on 24th May (how sad is it that i have to book in my spare time), so they will start off in the garage, then progress from there. One problem did occur with the movement of the birds, that was with Twitch. He is my Green Normal that has Henry George Bloodlines. I was told, and this is how he gets his name, that Twitch is fine when he is moved from small cage to small cage, but when he is caught from an aviary, he reacts badly. Well, true to name and form, Twitch reacted badly. Now, some birds will try to fly and go a little buts, but Twitch really does exhaust himself, to the point he lays practically comatose on the cage floor until he gets up the energy to go nuts again. Rubbing his stomach helps a little, but he still gets all frazzled when released. In the end, I put him in a wooden cage with a Cec Gearing hen. When he had calmed down, and she realised that she no longer had to escape as she now had company, she was all over him, preening him and making him feel good. I think I might unblock the access to the breeding box and see if these two want to see about becoming parents. Birds will go back in tomorrow. Pics to come soon Edited May 13, 200915 yr by Dave_McMinn
May 13, 200915 yr Author pics as promised The monster tree that is being removed on Friday The aviary's new location The now empty spot The birds in holding cages Twitch recovered with his new little friend And my new additions still quarantined seperately from the others in the laundry
May 13, 200915 yr :hap: hope your not planing on putting your car in the garage anytime soon :hap: Glad to hear things are moving along good luck getting the tree removed... that's huge.
May 13, 200915 yr Looks like you will enjoy the birds from your kitchen window Dave and sit on your patio having a cuppa watching them too :hap: Good luck with the tree. I had a 60 ft gum tree removed at my other house once as it was leaning towards the house and the root system wasnt holding it in place.
May 14, 200915 yr Author Well, the tree come sdown and out in the morning, the birds will go back in the aviary tomorrow afternoon. The aviary is not in an ideal spot at the moment, as it is right in the middle of everything in the backyard - not ideal. Tonight I filled the aviary so it is ready to have the bird put back in. This means that i reattached the dowel perches, I covered the bottom with sand - that way droppings will be easy to remove off the pavers and I will not need to water blast .. or scratch droppings off, nautral branches went back in. Seed bowl is in, vege containers are in, water is reattached to outside, solar powered lamps are hanging again up on the side. All the aviary needs now is occupants - LOL.
May 15, 200915 yr Author I am very please to have the tree down. All is good - tree down and stump ground. it will be nice to have the birds, well most of them, back in the aviary.
May 15, 200915 yr Author since it is getting dark so fast, the birds will not go back in until tomorrow. Well, the birds are back in the aviarya nd obviously loving it. I am now getting ready to put some breeding pairs down. Photos to come. Edited May 16, 200915 yr by Dave_McMinn
July 13, 200915 yr Author Just took some random pics The food on the grounf, whether seed or veges started higher up, and ended up beng thrown to the ground. Waste not want not seems to the the theory here.
September 11, 200915 yr Author Just though I would update in here. I had purchased some wonderful clearwings, but now I have decided against going down that very complicated road, so they are off to Perth again, this time to Renee. They will be missed, but removing 9 birds from the aviary to give them a better happier life where they can produce progeny in the future is always for the best. Plus, it gives me more room for the 09 babies who will be spreading their wings soon enough. Plus I will be setting up my sister's aviary in the next few weeks, so then another 9 or so birds will be mocing over there. I still want to cull a few more birds for space reasons, especially with mroe young ones coming through, so I might post any that are for sale up on here. We will see how that goes.
