Once a month!!!!

 

My hubby goes in and rakes up leaves and husks (there is a metal grid under the perches so most of the poo is inaccessible to the budgies), removes the grid and sweeps up the poo and then uses an outdoor brush to even and smooth over. Once every few months he'll top up the sand from our stockpile round the side so that there's always 4-5cm sand. I bought in 2 trailers worth of washed white sand, the stuff they use for children's sand pits. On the base, on the pavers we originally put down 1 inch Garden Lime.

 

Gone are the days of weekly scrubbing on bended knee!! :yes:

I introduced 8 of my 9 hens to the aviary today. Some acted like they were catching up with old freinds, some boys tried to jump them, and some hooked up like they had ben planning this rendezvous for weeks. Pics below

The cutest pair though is the Cec Gearing bred grey green spangle who I got as 3 month old, and she has paired up with a Hand Sibum grey boy. Look at her head in the pics where she is getting a scratch - she has filled out so well.

 

One Hen, a light green Cinnamon Wing was a bit sickly looking so she is getting a check up, Casear is on the road to recovery but will sleep inside for a few more weeks, and Wilde is a bit under the weather. i am down to only 3 more inside birds. Soon my garage will belong to my car again - LOL.

Great photos Dave, it must be so quiet in your house now the budgies are moving out. I have had to move my inside budgies to the dining room, hubby complained that they are too noisy in the loungeroom and he could not hear the telly.

I can see the backyard as a maze of aviaries some time in the very near future! New bird room, flights etc - looks like you are getting serious with those budgies!

Not going to happen - i love my grass too much. it is as mucha sickness as anything else.

 

I have the large flight, and I am building the new breeding room, but the grass has hardly been modified, nor the paved area. very few changes to the landscape actually. As for new flights, I just made an exisitng aviary better.

I believe there is a large gap between birdroom and flights for "future expansion"

I cleaned the aviary and the backyard this weekend, to give the birds a better home and a better view. You wil notice in the aviary shot there are some natural branches under the dowel perches. These are to help the birds that do not fly well, to climb up the branches to get to the perches.

Not really sure. No mega, no other illnesses. he wa not throwing up. Thinking maybe was that it was a common cold, budgie variety.He is fine now, in the aviary

I really cringed when I cam home from WA and my lawn was pretty much dead. It had taken a lot of work to get it back to what it now looks like.She has developed very well, and unfortunately for you, she will not be going anywhere.

I really like your birds-- so pretty. I think if I ever get back to breeding, I will want a large variety of bright colours like yours. Love the aviary set up too... it's always quite soothing looking through your photos!

Thanks Krosp. I have gone from the pet type to the show type. I like so many different birds. If I was to want to go and be a spectacularly successful show breeder, I would specialise more, and I may not have an aviary of colourful birds. I might just have a few varieties. The thing is, I love them all. I came home today, and in shirt and tie still, with good dress pants, i went in the aviary, and they all just flew around me. It is so cool. I love their different looks, i love their different personalities.

 

I find them so relaxing, they are good for my health.

I like pet types better, and I'm not planning to get into the competition, so I imagine that I will go for the colourful variety of pet types if I eventually get back into breeding.

lately i have been waking up in the middle of the night, sometimes due to my birds.

 

Last night I woke up and they were all in a panic. I thought there might be something in the avairy - rat or mouse - so armed witht he torch, i went downstairs and outside for a look.

 

The reason they were all panicking was simple - I had put a ladder in there to help the slightly disabled, and the hens had been chewing through the small dowel rungs on the ladder. Well, in the middle of the night, with a few probably perched on it, the remaning chewed rung gave way. The ladder fell to the ground, the birds fell, and the others were all spooked. Now, it takes them time to settle and find their way back to a perch, so they were all in a bit of a huff, well most. The only thing hurt was pride, and of course the ladder.

 

So now it seems, they are doing things to cause them, and me, night problems -

I have a very funny image in my head of the ladder splitting in half and budgies going everywhere

 

Mine get night frights at times (due to my overly spooky tiels who jump at shadows) and i have lights that i turn on for about 30 mins to help them settle back down to sleep.
