There is a brand new pet shop just opened near me, they have their birds in lovely big cages and they are trying really hard to get it right. I visited for the first time today and had a lovely chat to them, they were very receptive to my advice regarding cage sizes for budgies, etc (they had been selling cages which were too small). They had the most lovely little budgie there and I will be picking her up tomorow. She is a very strange colour. A skyblue yellow face type 2. However this is where it gets strange. The green and blue is mottled all over her body as single feathers rather than fading from top to bottom and her wings are mottled standard black/brown and cinnamon! Has anyone seen one like this before? She is only youngish so time will tell whether it moults out at her next moult but I am prepared to take a chance and see how she develops.

She is strange! Like half way between a fallow and a yellow face blue

I will post a photo of my newby after I pick her up tomorrow.

Maybe it's a yellow Faced 2 going through it's first moult & the Greener feathers are coming out...look forward to seeing the photo.

I thought that too, but it s the mottled wing feathers that are really confusing, they are a mix of dark brown/black and lighter-mid brown. Unlike other YF2s that I have had the feathers are interspersed rather than going from top to bottom. If you have seen the kids book rainbowfish, a bit like the rainbow scales - just here and there, no real pattern

I would be so interested in seeing the new one :D , there is such thing as a mottled budgie http://www.budgieplace.com/c_mottled.html

Not mottled as the feathers aren't growing clear they are two different coloured varieties... Also not rainbow as rainbow includes a combination of clearwing and opaline I think and she is essentially normal, just in strange colours. I will be picking her up in about 10 hours so count down to photos!

she could be in bad feather condition too or 1/2 way through a molt as stated which is making her look that way too...

My thoughts too Elly, some have very pale feathers when they are young maybe depending on how they were fed, which darken up later, will be good to see the picture that will help us.

She certainly doesn't have that messy moulting look. I pick her up in a coupld of hours so I'll post some photos as soon as I can.

Will be looking forward to seeing the picture, lets hope it’s some rare mutation.

Here are the photos!

Rather than reduce them to fit them on the forum I have left them large so that they are easier to see

The thing that gets me is the mix of black and cinnimon on the wings.

Also on the 'tail-shot' you can see therre are areas where the blue seems to be missing which means the yellow from the YF2 is showing as yellow rather than green.

She looks very pretty. :budgiedance:

The paler brown areas on her wings are cinnamon, the dark feathers are black. The rest of her feathers are washed out except for splodges on her back that are darker where the normal feathers are. Also notice that the yellow on the non-cinnamon wing feathers is brighter than on the cinnamon feathers.

As you can see sort of on this photo she is not cinnamon on her head and neck like my full cinnamon birds and then she is normal in spots as seen on the wing shot.

WOW!! Very nice!! :budgiedance:

I look forward to seeing what her type is too :dbb1:

Compare to this one which is full cinnamon and it is easy to see the colour differnece on the back and neck.

Well s/he is only a youngster and that photo makes hte ceres look alot bluer for some reason? There is actually a brown tinge to the bottom, I was a bit torn whether it was a boy or a girl as the colour is not really that blue :budgiedance:.

DEFINITELY a boy. :dbb1: and has light iris rings, so not all that young.

Treat also for the beginnings of scaly face ...not too bad, but starting to develop.
