advice please!

i've been reading a lot about wing clipping for budgies and im guessing by the amount that Barney flies about that he's not had them clipped

he doesn't really like sitting on my finger very much or doing anything with me! (i get the feeling he doesnt like me much! maybe im just being paranoid and expecting to much to soon)

so back to wing clipping-he's not had it done but im considering it seeing as i doubt he'll ever be tame without getting it done

wot im lookin for really is some advice-what do u all think?

at the moment he has full run of the lounge during the day, (i leave the radio on for him)

he regularly hops in and out to feed and sometimes just to sit on his perch, at night he'll fly back in himself so he can be put to bed.

any advice wud be great thanks!

Umm well i tamed all my birds without their wings clipped does barney bite or anythign becasue then it would be a diferent story but i don['t think clipping is nessecary it will make it sadder and more deppresed!

although he's very nervious about hands and people, he's never once tried to bite anyone and he seems so happy to be flying around and having the run of the lounge

just am unsure wot to do and wanted some expert advice :) hehehe

i think its personal choice, really. mine have never been depressed about it. my mum makes me clip them because we have two story rooms (a lot of them) in our house and big windows. and my dad doesnt like them.

i usually clip them one time as short as needed (so they cant get lift) when i first get the bird, then i only trim enough to make them look trimmed (so the bird can still fly but my mum wont say anything)

Not that I am an expert or anything you know umm...its just that I odn't think its right...

i clip their wings when we first get the bird so incase they get freaked out they wont smack into the wall (happened to one of ours once with no clipped wings, it died) they can still fly accross, just they cant fly up.

One of our birds charli didnt mind at all, but our older bird cooper was bit of a sook for a week or 2 after it was done. but since then they have been fine!

having clipped wings makes taming a bird easier as they are more likely to want to sit on your hand/shoulder rather than run arround on the ground. once they are tame then their wings will grow back after a while and you dont have to do it again.

Its personal choice, from what i have read on here seems alot of the overseas people (like the UK) dont like to do it. i know alot of people here in australia that do it.

He sounds to be doing fine but I wonder if you could spend a bit of time going back to basic taming just to help him bond a bit more with you.(i.e. hand in cage etc.)

i have never or even thought about clipping Mitsi & Scoobys wings, ther both love flying so much two i think they would miss it to.

Bird were made with wings to aid escaping from preditors (which is what you are viewed as to an untamed budgie), its the old saying 'fight or flight'.

Each to their own tho, there are pros n cons for each way.

you should concentrate on gaining ur budgies trust, try hand feeding n talking to him, and generaly get him used to being around you so you become one of his flock.

When i first got mitsi he learnt that to come out of this cage he had to step onto my hand which would put him on top of his cage where there would be a tasty treat, now he comes n goes as he pleases.

i found with my budgie that the harder i tried to tame him, the harder he would start to bite me and the more he would fly away. he is only young so i decided to clip his wings and tame him (i hoped this way he would learn that i am the boss and not him so would stop biting, i am getting there and the best thing is his wings will grow back in the summer :) so its not permanent.

good luck whatever you decide to do, keep us posted :)

IF you clip (and i dont like it particularly) please be sure that it is only a clip and not a butcher. Your bird shouls still be able to fly quite well, and glide to the ground gracefully, not hit it like a brick. So many badly clipped birds die as a result of a broken keel (breast) bone because their wings have been butchered beyond all flying ability. And a novice should never attempt to clip wings, its a job for the experienced only, or an avian vet. If you must do it,

TRIM, DONT BUTCHER !

i think the amount of necessary clipping depends on the bird, casper was an extremely good flyer, the first length the vet clipped to was too long and he could still gain height, she trimmed a little more each time until he could GLIDE but not gain height. you should still be very prepared to catch them before they hurt themselves and only have them low to the ground the first week after they are clipped. i usually have casper over my bed so that he doesnt harm himself trying to fly. after a week or so they should know their limits and calm down a bit. :)

how long have you had barney and do you know how old he is? taming takes some time weather you clip his wing or not.

Hi,

I would just like to say that I would not like to see text shortcuts in your posts again.

We are very strict on this here.

I have edited your post to the correct words.

i've had barney around 4months and i think he's 6months but like i say, im not entirely sure.

basically im just starting to get worried because after 4months he wont go near anyone. he just sits on my ceiling lights all day. maybe he just doesnt like me!

suppose i was thinking about wing clipping because im expecting too much too soon. but i really do thing after 6months he's used to flying around and i'd rather not clip

anyway thanks for the advice everyone!
