Bald Patches

Featured Replies

Hello everyone!

I'm a pretty new budgie owner: I brought two budgies a couple of months ago, Jack and Ennis.

Just recently Ennis has developed bald patches on his head, just above his cere and in a couple of places around it. Both of them have been moulting terribly, but I don't think the balding should be happening. He seems fine otherwise, I don't think it bothers him and his behaviour hasn't changed, but I'm still worried.

Does anyone have any ideas what it could be? Should I take him to the vet? The photo doesn't really show it that well, but Ennis decided to be camera shy.

Thanks!

Hello and welcome :D

Ennis is looking like some of the birds in my flock at the moment, they are a mess and it is due to a bad/heavy moult. :D Before not too long, you will find big spiky pin feathers coming though the bald patches. Some call it the "pin cushion effect" hehehe. They look really cute :)

Moulting is highly stressful at best for a budgie. make she they have lots of fresh food and water. Don't let them get cold in a draft. You could even add some vitamins to their water to give them a boost though this tough time.

Ooh thank you! That's a relief! :)

Aww I didn't know that, poor boys. Their food and water is seen to daily though, and I've made sure they're not getting a draft. The dogs were moved out of the spare bedroom so that the budgies could live in there because it's one of the warmest rooms, hehe. Two very unimpressed dogs. :D I'll definitely see into the vitamins though. Thanks again!!

I agree with the above statements some molts are heavier then others, Ennis reminds me of my late Pretty.

i have to say... your budgie looks quite cute with that little patch :)

they do get very stress full, my budgie sometimes goes crazy when he is moulting :)

Hi, thanks birdluv!

Aww Ennis really does look like Pretty. How sweet

Sure enough, the bald patches are completely gone now and he's got a very spiky head. It's so cute!
