Car Travel ?

Hi

Just wondering how budgie's handle car travel over a long distance ? Mine's been okay to the vet and back but was wondering how they would go if you took them on holiday's or was relocating interstate etc etc ?

Anyone here taken there away on say a caravan holiday ?

Thanks .

Tim, transported Merlin 6 hours without an issue they will travel well as long as you provide them a stable enviroment (not too hot, not to cold, no drafts), also food and water (lettuce soaked in water is good so it doesn't spill). What were you thinking?

I agree with Elly,

Birds travel well. I flew a tiel from Adelaide to Melbourne a few weeks ago. From door to door he was in the freight box for 6-7 hours. He also did great :hap: (and loves his new home)

I have not known someone to take their birds on a caravan holiday. I think as long as the cage is secure, not in any drafts, and possibly covered with a dark cloth while on the move, it will be okay. It depends on the extent of the traveling you are planning to do i guess.

I have moved to three different locations in the past 6 years. First from Melbourne to Wagga, then from Wagga to Nowra, then from Nowra back to Melbourne. On all these occasions I had to transport a car full of animals including birds with me. I have never had a single bird get stressed by the travel. Melbourne to wagga is about 500km, Wagga to Nowra about 500km and Nowra to Melbourne about 1000km. In the car I had dogs, cats, birds, lizards, rats and fish! It was chaotic but we coped :D

hi

yes i have taken my budgie on long car trips. if u have a swing i would tape it still so they don't hit the top of cage if on it. mine always liked loud music and a bit of air coming in the windows.

Mine always sing on long car trips...they are particularly fond of ABBA and BONEY M on CD and they absolutely hate BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN :(

Thanks everyone , sounds like they travel okay .

I have moved my birds about 10 times so far. Not too long trips though. About 40 minutes each. They seemed to like it. Not love it but they did chirp and extended their heads trying to see outside. It was kinda funny to observe them.

What do you mean by 'draft', they dont like 'draft'

does this mean blowing air because mine loves a bit of fresh air blowing on him.

:) bit confused with that one.

by the way, when i take mine in the car, i put him in a small cage with food and soaked lettuce. and he just sits there looking out the window.

I think the 'drafts' thing is confusing. What is really harmful to them is some room temperature with an extremely different temperature of air blowing on them, like warm air from a heater or really cold air from outside.

I take all the swinging toys down when I take mine in the car, as they tend to knock about.

A friend of mine spent three years on the rd with her teil and three budgies. She attached their cage to a bench in the caravan so it would not go anywhere or on really hot or cold days the birds came into the car with her never had an issue.
