How To Get An Albino?

Featured Replies

I was wondering... If you breed a blue and a lutino is that how you get a albino? I am breeding birds with my 2 young daughters. Allysa(4) has been asking if we can have a white one. I know that is how you do it with Ringnecks. I was just wondering if budgies are the same? Thankyou!!

Not knowing the parentage of your two birds I will answer as if no hidden genes are present in your birds.

You will get all Green babies The males will be carrying the "INO" gene and all will be split for Blue. Subsequent breeding of these Green male babies split for blue & carrying the ino gene paired to a blue hen can result in Albino offspring.

The reason for this is that the yellow budgies are green based and the white budgies are blue based and green is dominant over blue.

If you only have a Lutino you can use it to produce an Albino. The quickest way would be if you had a Lutino male split for Blue & paired it with a Blue hen. If not it’s a pretty long way, as if your Lutino was pure Green series & you paired it with a Blue first generation you would only get Green birds split for Blue. If you had only a hen Lutino, that also would take two generations, as paired to a Blue cock [unless he was split for Ino] you would only get split Ino cocks & Normal coloured hens. These split Ino cocks would then have to be mated to Blue hens to get your Albinos.

I have a lutino hen and have not paired her yet. So when I ask the breeders in my area about their birds what should I be looking for to get albino?

You will need a male that is split to albino (white) or a albino male that is the only way you are going to get what you are looking for. The lutino female (yellow) will only produce male off spring split for lutino you will not get Albino babies with her.

And if your Lutino is not split for Blue, even with a split Albino or Albino you will only get Lutinos.

If you really want albinos buy a cock and a hen and breed them , if you are trying genetically it will take forever
