Posted April 28, 200817 yr Just wondering how everybody served there fruit and vegies to their birds? I have always finely sliced the greens and grated carrot, fruit etc. When I was in the fruit and vegie shop yesterday I was speaking with a lady who said oh no you just put chunks of the vegies in you don't cut them up?? Am I doing the wrong thing?
April 28, 200817 yr I chop mine up also so it's easier for them and the quails to eat and there's less wastage because it doesn't get left behind to rot within the next few hours...
April 29, 200817 yr One of the top show breeder I know says its best to put it all through a food processor....that they can take the goodness into their bodies better that way. Looks like mush but his eat it that way AND he has National Show winning budgies to prove his theories. I fine slice my green and grate the carrots. I also serve whole leaves of bok choy or silver beet too.
April 29, 200817 yr :hap: I try and chop them up small and put them in their treat dishes but when pushed for time will just hang a nice piece of Romaine in their cage or sprig of broccoli. I did have a cool post about making vegetable and fruit skewers (which I haven't done in a long time due to the time factor) but it went over well as I recall for a bit as some of the birds thought they were toys. :feedbirds:
April 29, 200817 yr I have a mix, I have chopped vegies on a platter which they enjoy tearing to bits, I also sprinkle over the top with grated carrot, apple and celery which I mix with egg and biscuit and soaked legumes. In my smaller cages I put the grated mix in a bowl and then give them skewers as I find less mess that way. You can see what I feed and how chunky it is HERE
