Posted February 16, 200520 yr okay, our budgie laid her first egg on the 1st of Feb so we guess it is due to hatch tomorrow, she also has 3 other eggs. We are just curious to what we should expect and what, if anything, we might need to do! Will they hatch during the day or at night? Will the babies be noisy like their parents? what will the hen do? what will the **** do? When should we seperate the parents from the babies? This is our first ever time with baby budgies so we're excited and aprehensive!!! Also, we've almost finished building an outside avairy, how long should we wait before we put the babies outside and what about the adults as they have lived in-doors for 3 years?will it hurt them to go outside? We also just brought 2 more budgies(we couldn't help it, they are beautiful) one is 12 weeks old and the other is 3, when can they go outside in the avairy? Please help!!!!! Thanks Sue and Nicola
February 16, 200520 yr How exciting! I'm not a breeder so I can't offer any practical advice but hopefully you won't have to do too much for a while if the parents prove to be good ones. Look forward to hearing what happens! Good Luck! Julie
February 16, 200520 yr okay, our budgie laid her first egg on the 1st of Feb so we guess it is due to hatch tomorrow, first it takes 18 days for the eggs to hatch so it will be the 19th not the 17th but dont be suprised if it is the 21st as some birds dont start to incubate till the 2 egg is laid Will they hatch during the day or at night? most of mine start to hatch early afternoon this year but i dont tnink i have had any hatch at night at all but dont know if any body else has Will the babies be noisy like their parents? hopefully they will be loud as this stimulates the hen into feeding them what will the hen do? hopefully feed them and continue to sit on the rest of the eggs and keep the When should we seperate the parents from the babies? i try and leave the chicks with the parents for 10 days after leaving the nest as this ensures they are feeding themselves properly as for the aviary depending which country your in in the uk wait till the frosts have finished and all the birds can go outside and as long as you have a indoor part they will be okay to stop out next winter hope this helps
February 16, 200520 yr okay im a breeder too and well you should leave thenm alone. The food will finisha little faster so be careful feed themn fruits and stuff and it will keep the hen happy becasue the number one cause of deaths for budgies when mating is lack of food becasue they feed the bird soo much after 3 weeks take the babies out!
February 16, 200520 yr after 3 weeks take the babies out! surely this is a mistake mine dont leave the nest till 5 to 6 weeks if they do i put them back
February 16, 200520 yr Wow my budgie ventured out of the cage at 4 weeks and now it is out and its 5 weeks and i took it ouyt at 3 weeks it had most of it feathers and i had read a couple of websites that said it was okay so u know i did it!
February 16, 200520 yr 3 weeks is WAY to early to take the babies out. Allow them to leave the nest box on their own. Mine would venture out somewhere around 4-5 weeks, but weren't out completely until 5-6 weeks. At 3 weeks the feathers are not even all in! The food will finisha little faster so be careful feed themn fruits and stuff and it will keep the hen happy becasue the number one cause of deaths for budgies when mating is lack of food becasue they feed the bird soo much after 3 weeks take the babies out! I'm not sure I agree with this...If your birds are healthy to begin with, they will continue to eat as much as is necessary...it's not like food will disappear 10 x faster or anything like that. Your regular daily maintenance should suffice.
February 17, 200520 yr I think 3 weeks is far too early, they would not have learnt to crack seed at that age. Mine come out around 3.5 weeks and 4 weeks, but only for a look around then we have to put them back as they cannot get back up into the breeding box. I dont know how they would get back into the nest if they were in an aviary, seems to me its a long way to the ground, and Id be scared they'd get hurt. Cindy
February 17, 200520 yr Im not saying that the food dissapears or anyhting it just goes away faster or is just plain covered with seeds. Anyways the bird ventured out on its own at 4 weeks 2 days and it was fine. I just took it out of the nestbox and into my hand at 3 weeks. And now i don't see anyhting wrong with it i don't know why you are complaining its actually a very smart and healthy bird it can hang upside down for like 1 minute and it goes on my shoulder and everything...
February 17, 200520 yr after 3 weeks take the babies out! Anyways the bird ventured out on its own at 4 weeks 2 days which is it ? do you mean you handled the chick at 3 weeks or took it away from its parents at 3 weeks ? the question was when to seperate chicks from adults, 3 weeks is way to soon and in my opinion the chick would die unless you hand fed it we are not complaining but very worried as a lot of new breeders come here for advice and a mistake (if it is one) could have a terrible ending
February 17, 200520 yr Oh to take it away from the parents I must have misunderstood the questions, but I know how to hand feed I just don't do it...I tried once with this yound budgie and it worked...kinda...
