Well some of you may remember a while back i got 8 birds off a very generous man from my club. When he was here he told me a bit about the birds, but I for some stupid reason didn't pay much attention. He mentioned one bird was "crest" bred, but since there was no evidence visually i was a bit pessimistic... not knowing anything about crested budgies probably didn't help this. I couldn't even remember who he said was crest bred, but i know the bird was bred from a lady up in the hills named Julie.

Well his df spangle cock was paired to my violet hen. Today on a nest inspection we found some very exciting results....

Now at first when i saw this a few days ago i thought it was another baby with mis-directed feathers and it would start to right itself, but when i saw the second chick with it... the peices of the puzzle fell together, but even though i've never seen one before in real life, they definatly look like crested to me, or tufted, which ever it is. Does any one know anything about breeding crested birds, and what kind of gene they're connected with to get the chicks from a crest bred cock???

OH WOW!!! That is EXCITING!!!!!

Looks like baby 1 will have a FULL crest too :hap: :D :D

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

Thanks guys, cheers for that MB.

Although it doesn't tell me much about the gene it does confirm that a crest bred bird can have crested offspring, so that helps, alot! :P

There has been much written about the crest but I think little understood as I have read many theories about the gene, as Im aware it isnt fully dominent as if you breed two crest together all the progeny wont be crest . I feel as with colours "light medium and dark" the crest is carried in the gene the same way and depending on how potent the gene is , then this tranfers to the young as a "tuft, half or full crest".

I can't wait to see them feather up, what a wonderful surprise :budgiedance:

I've done a bit of reading on crested udgies but I've stopped now only becuase you read from 5 different sourses and you get 5 different opinions... some say don't breed two crested budgies together as they will become deformed and others say you get the best from breeding two crested together... I'd stick on the side of caution on that one...

But... that said.. I think it is awesome that you bred a couple... look forward to seeing them grow up... They look great!

wow that's so exciting!Congratulations!

I started to get all the mis-leading info too Jimmy, so i stayed on one article by a local breeder here in perth and will take his advice. I've seen pictures of his birds, so i think that helped me settle which info to listen to

Congratulations Libby, I will watch with interest to see how they turn out. That reminded me that I had a chick with some feathers like that on it’s head in the nest, but forgot about it so don’t know what happened to it. Even though I’m into rares, for some reason I’m not that attracted to Crests.

To be honest norm, i don't find them that attractive either! bahaha  maybe it's because i'm not a big fancier of spangles... By The Way, that suprise fallow chicks feathering up nicely, i'll get a picture of him/her today for you :hap:

Funny thing about crested budgies...I dont like them either, but I LOVE crested canaries  BUT I am still interested in how your surprise crested babies turn out :hap:

Good one Libby, was just thinking about how it was going?

Yes I'm the same Kaz, I like the Canaries, but the Budgies seem different, maybe just got used to the Canaries. I was trying to breed Clear coloured Canaries with Dark mop tops, I did breed some, but now both my remaining Cresteds aren't hatching chicks so it seems the end of the line will have to get some more.

it's going good Norm, colours coming through on it's rump more although it's small  but that's okay, i like pet types :hap: and i have some pet type split from my recently missing male pet type so they could help :D

i'm always happy to welcome a new mutation to the aviary :hap: it's just a shame it's not mixed with a favourite one

There was a few years ago a breeder of crested budgies not 10 minutes from my place. I've lost his number & he no longer advertises. I am interested in getting a couple at some stage.

Cute little cresties Libby.

I have in my hot little hand the name and number of a breeder near Melbourne. He hasn't any at the moment but I'm going on the waiting list :hap:

Sounds good, we've got a few crested breeders, but i've never been overly interested in them... much prefer the local fallow breeder one suburb away :hap:

I just want the option to breed them, I love the unusual types. They are fairly uncommon obviously so they would be a great addition to my breeding group.
