Breeding

I have a violet spangle cock called Blue, his best friend died a few weeks ago and i would like to introduce a baby female to him. Will they breed (lay eggs) without a nest box and what about the female being only a baby???? So help would be great as i really want to get him a female friend!!!!

They should be fine. As long as there is nothing in there that looks like a nest box they shouldn't try to breed. If you do want to breed them you need to wait until your female is atleast a year old.

I agree with melbournebudgies. the vast majority of budgies won't breed unless there is a place for them to lay their eggs... I don't forsee a problem other than the fact that budgies should be older than 1 before breeding... If your unsure of the exact age of a budgie the safe thing to do is wait a year... :( Good luck.

Is your cage large enough and set up for two budgies ? Remember quarantine of 30 days minimum ina seperate cage and at least 5 metres away. Do you have another cage ?

yah i took the advice of others and got the largest cage i could afford but i don't want to breed budgies just yet.

Yes of course after quarantine...and with nothing in the cage she can think of using as a nest too early in her life.

But what about feed containers, What else could you do to distract her from nest making. I change Blue cage around every week (new natural perches etc) when i clean it out. Will changing the cage around weekly distract her from nest making???

Putting a a boy and girl budgie together is no reason to panic about eggs and nests. You say you are getting a baby budgie so there's plenty of time to worry about breeding. MOST BUDGIES will not lay eggs and try and have babies UNLESS they have somewhere to raise them. Dont put anytthing in the cage that resembles a nest thats all...no snugglehut things and nothing they can nest with. Its nestboxes that make them think of babies .....like being given permission and a place to have them.

If you ever see the two of them having birdie sex ( later on ) ignore it until they are of age. Birdie sex is a recreational past time for a budgie and doesnt lead to as some think, a pregnancy, or to eggs and babies.

Just have your second cage ready for quarantine and put her in there for at least a month before introducing them. Plenty of time to worry about the other stuff much further down the track :(

Here is a photo of Blue. The budgie u can see in the background is Blue's old friends who had to be put down due to cancer. Blue, Im hoping to breed him one day with a recessive pied hen. In the future some time when she is of the right age

Please remember to edit on photobucket to under 450 by 450 as per forum size requirements

Blue is very nice...hard to see from that photo but is he also opaline ?

On the photobucket page click ust above the photo on the tag that says EDIT. It will bring up the edit page and you can change the size up the top. There is a drop down list there which has website size as an option.

When you first look and they are large its usually due to your browser showing them that way. If you refresh your browser they become the size everyone else will see here. Now you first posted picture says its no longer there. Try and load up a picure from photobucket at the right size and I will tidy up this topic for you :hap:
