would a dog crate be okay to use as a breeding cage for my budgies if i put like chicken wire over the large gaps in the bars?

I am not a breeder but I would say NO. If you are going to breed, have the proper set up (lots of examples on here on how to be a responsible breeder). It sounds like your proposed setup would be hard to clean and the chicken wire overlay would bend and possibly be harmful to all.

I agree. Although it is possible that it could work, it's not the best thing for the birds, or the most comfortable, best to go with the proper ways, even buying a cheap breeding cage if you don't want to use specific cabinets.

I would of thought by the time you buy the right size chicken wire, and the dog crate it might be cheaper to buy material for a whole breeding cage from scratch....
