I'm New!

Hi all,

I'm new on this board. I own 8 beautiful budgies and 2 gorgeous cockatiels! The budgies are 1 sky blue and white pied, a yellow face cobolt opaline, a grey green, a violet, a yellow and dark green pied, 2 green and yellow danish pieds and one yellow face cobolt. The cockatiels are normal greys. I am trying to breed the budgies and the cockatiels. Does anyone have any budgie or cockatiel boxes for sale?? Also, are the budgies and cockatiels less likely to breed because I have them in a aviary together along with my mum's lovebirds?

Thanks,

Sam and the birds :D

Welcome to the BBC forum, hope you enjoy your time here. Make yourself at home, I did... :D How big is your aviary? I would imagine that it is not ideal breeding conditions and the budgies can sense that... I know that the majority of people here don't colony breed because they have had trouble... and that is only with budgies in the aviary... add tiels and lovebirds to the mix and I don't know how successful you are going to be... i don't know how tiels and Lovebirds mate but for the budgies you need to remember you have 8 birds, I'm going to guess 4 male 4 female... that means you need at least 8 nest boxes at the same height just for the budgies... and that is just for the budgies... add to that mix the tiels breeding... I would imagine the same applies to them so thats 2 more nest boxes.

I'm not trying to dishearten you, but I would consider the cost and then you might find you'd be better off buying/making a breeding cage (wire or wooden) and then you only need to buy 5 nest boxes in stead of 10... you don't have to breed all at the same time if you don't want...

Just my thoughts, I just think its a fairly dangerous mix breeding tiels and budgies together, and on top of that having lovebirds in there... breeding tends to bring out the protective side in the parents, they might all get along fine now but add to that the thought of babies... and it could be quite explosive...

Good luck and like I said, welcome to the forum, I hope you enjoy yourself here... lots of great people with great advice...

budgies and lovebirds or any other bird mixed in with lovebirds should never be put together. Try to get some pictures of your aviary and do some breeding reading before starting... all conditions must be ideal :hap:

Welcome to the forums. It is suggested above that budgies & other species of birds should not mix and that is very true and even more true when breeding. Before you start breeding I would suggest thinking about closed breeding options vs colony breeding (where many things can go wrong).

Here are some articles from our site to read and you can ask questions anytime.

Breeding should always be researched throughly & taken into serious consideration because many people think it is easy to breed...it is easy to produce eggs & even check it is difficult to produce GOOD healthy quality chicks which is what every breeder (novice or advance) should strive for along with that good home for any of the babies that are not going to be kept.

 Hello and welcome to BBC but you MUST sort out all your birds before breeding and consider if you should be breeding at all!!! First of all, lovebirds must be housed together and even then, if not compatible, they may not do all that well;if you have lovebirds with other birds consider yourself lucky if the other birds are not maimed or dead. Cockatiels and budgies can be housed together if their personalities allow. However, in a breeding situation, all should be segregated according to species. Others have posted great advice, please read all postings and decide if you should really be breeding at all. :book:

Hello and welcome.

I colony bred tiels and budgies in the same aviary for a while. The budgies did great, but the tiels were a complete flop!

I am going to start cabinet breeding in spring instead.

I would not have the love birds in the same aviary as the budgies and tiels. They really should be separated before breeding, otherwise there could be some nasty fights (and the budgies WONT win!)

Thanks to you all for your help. I am going to take the lovebirds out and try just the cockatiels and budgies. The tiels and the budgies all get on fine. Also, I am going to try using breeding cages.

Thanks,

Sam

Hello... I did have cockateils, budgies and lovebirds together. They belonged to my uncle and he passed them on to me. I found that the lovebirds did breed but the budgies and teils did not. We ended up selling the peachfaces and cockateils and now the budgies are breeding like wildfire.. My aviary was a birthday present from my sisters and it was second hand (cost $50) which I have found to be as good as my husbands $600 aviary.

Hi and welcome, Heaps of great adivse has been given to you so I will just add that the reason for not having the love birds( peachfaces) in with the others is that you may end up with Budgies with eaten toes and alot of fights
