I have four olive green males, I am moving two on. I have two opaline and two normals. Since opaline is sex-linked would I be better off keeping the two opalines? If I then breed these birds to a normal female will I get normal babies if I want them? I guess the females would be opalines but the males would be normals split for opaline is that right?

 

I am not looking to breed for specific colours/wing patterns more trying to keep a diversity of different colours and patterns in my aviary.

are you sure the opalines are males? what're the parents? any pictures... the dad would atleast have to be split opaline and the hen showing it for the babies to be male... young hens can look like cocks to the inexperienced eye....

No-one can tell you which to keep, that's your personal prefrence with your own reasoning

They are adults and have very distinct bright blue ceres, I think it is highly unlikely they would be females. I guess I am just asking from a genetic point of view, I don't want to lose anything by getting rid of both of the normals but if it's unlikely that I will then I won't worry.

 

I actually have quite a few opalines and almost all of them are males, just lucky I guess .

If you want opalins in your aviary, keep them if not keep the normals if you think you have enough opalines, and if you're undecided, why not keep one of each

All four definatly olives and not grey greens, as that could alter your decision also... they're very similar

I have no idea, I struggle to see the difference! I'll post some piccies...

 

As well as the guy above there is another the same colour and these two normals. I also have this yellowy green guy:

those three seem to be olives... the difference between olive and grey green is the cheek patches, olives are blue, grey green are grey BUT some grey greens have blue ones it's not specific, but it's the general rule to follow where you don't know parentage, but all three boys seem like olives to me

Possibly not for sale, I am swapping some budgies with someone tomorrow and just trying to work out what will be going. I have a heap of other birds that she has to choose from so not sure what I will have left. If I still have some to move after I see her I will put a for sale add up.

good thing I mentioned that cos I would've been out there tomorrow.. well that makes it a bit easier tomorrow was going to be a tight fit for me... now its not so bad...

If you want to produce more opalines I would say keep the males as you have a chance for more opaline babies but I also believe that keeping good normals are important to breed back too. Daz would know more about this, if you give him a quick PM and this linik to the post I am sure he will jump on when he has a chance.

 

Olives vs Grey Greens:

 

Olives have dark blue/purple cheek patches and black-blue tails.

Grey-greens have silver grey patches and black tails.

 

 

Olive is a bird with 2 dark factors - in green it goes light green with no dark factors, dark green with 1 dark factor, and olive with 2 dark factors. Dark factors are inherited from their parents based on what color they are.. and how many they have.

 

Grey-green is when a green bird inherits a grey gene from it's parents.. In blue birds, a bird that gets a grey gene would be grey.

 

Which one fits your bird best?

They come from basically green stock of varying shades and they have those blue cheek patches so I would say olive..

They look grey greens not olives to me...have they navy blue tails or have they black tails ?
