Posted April 24, 200817 yr Hi My bird just loves ripping the bark off the perches , so Ive been replacing them very often just so she can do this as my vet said she will love it . My question is how much is good and is there too much as my bird will stripp a new branch every day ? Before I even get the new one in there she will jump on it and start stripping it . Cheers
April 25, 200817 yr you may want to also give her other things to shred to along with a preening toy to help keep her busy in different areas, also using different toys where they can forage for food will help out with stripping so much and so quickly.
April 25, 200817 yr As long as he's eating the other food that you put in for him and he is getting a variety I wouldn't be to worried... unless you can't keep up the supply of branches then I would consider not putting so many in...
April 25, 200817 yr I've been buying Sugar Cane Strips. They come in a package of about 12 & you keep them in the refridgerator after opening the package. They are 10 inches long & about a quarter of an inch wide. I give one to the birds to destroy once a week. I've learned that you can freeze these strips & keep them for a long time safely in the freezer. The birds rip these apart as I clamp them on the tree branches. I've also been clamping other things on the branches too to give them a variety to taste. Apples or carrot strips, green beans or sweet peas in the pod. Just clamp them on the branch & it introduces variety's to chew. I've seen some choking & vomiting a few times from one bird who was extremely into chewing the apple tree branches. To make sure that doesn't happen again, I offered more to chew & find they leave the tree bark alone now.
