Flooded Aviary

Featured Replies

It has been raining for the last 2 weeks and heavy for the last 2 days.when i went to my aviary this morning the bottom part of my yard is flooded and that is where my aviary is so there is 2 inches of water in my aviary. The rain has come down to fast for the trench to cope with it. My quails were sitting on their log trying to stay dry so i have brought them into the house. What i am wondering is if my budgies will be okay if i leave them in the aviary. i have just read on the net that there is a flash flooding warning for our area.we are okay where we are but the flat lands around us will be affected. The budgies seed and water containers are up high and full covered roof so the budgies are dry but i am worried about diseases. any advice please.

If your aviary has been wet like that I would think the best thing would be to clean it out as best you can & just hope they are right about it finishing later today & will dry out as quick as possible.

If you haven’t a large number of birds & you have some smaller cages that you can put them in without overcrowding, you could do that, but moving is always stressful to them.

my aviary is a soil floor so my husband has dug around the outside to drain the water out but i cannot clean it till it dries up.i only have 10 in the aviary but i think it would upset them if i moved them.my husband is doing a trip to bunnings today if they are opened and look at what we can do for better drainage.

I hope the water clears out for you soon. you have 2 aviarys, are they both flooded?? if one is better than the other, perhaps just put all the birds in one until the water clears.

Is your new aviary fixed to the ground. can you and some friends pick it up and carefully move it to a new spot until the water clears????

I wish we had just a fraction of your rain so please tell those big rain clouds to visit SA!! hehehehe

Sadly Deb, that’s the trouble with an earth floor. It wouldn’t be my choice for keeping Budgies. Do you have anything dry? Like sand or sawdust that you could cover the wet area? Is it still raining there, it looks like it still is via the radar. You could get a bag of agriclutral lime & sprinkle over the floor that might help kill bugs & even dry it a little.

Hopefully Liv, your in the winter rainfall area, so lets hope your dose is on it’s way soon.

My husband has decide that our next project when money will let us is to get concrete tiles for the aviary floor.at the moment it is not raining but very overcast so waiting for it to bucket down again. i do have sand in my kids sand pit but it is covered in water as well. The hardest thing is that all shops are shut this morning for anzac day so i have to wait till after lunch before i can get some stuff to fix the aviary.

i like the idea of lime... hopefully that would soak a bit of the moisture up... good luck with the clean up, I don't envy you...
