Posted April 24, 200817 yr Can anyone tell me what's involved, including costs, etc. I imagine there is quarantine issues, etc. Not specifically budgies we are looking at larger birds like African Greys.
April 24, 200817 yr You I know may be able to do a google but I would contact the Department that deals with this specifically since every country is different, I know from the US to England it was a very long drawn out process (months).
April 24, 200817 yr I'd start with the DPI (Department of Primary Industry) or the Environment. As the bird flue is still a scare in Europe, it may be very difficult to do.
April 24, 200817 yr try looking interstate for the birds you are after - someone will breed them somewhere
April 24, 200817 yr Yes the quarantine facility in Victoria is shut down at the present time, due I think to the bird flu scare, but even when it’s open it’s a very expensive exercise.
April 24, 200817 yr I don't think they would be happy with importing birds you can already purchase here in Australia anyway....even if they are outrageously more expensive. I think an african grey is about $800-$1000 in the US, and $4000 here.

Is there a budgie breeding game out there for it?? hmmm...
April 25, 200817 yr Author Depends on the purpose I guess. There is no issue with importing high quality dogs for breeding from overseas. It really isn't up to the breeders in Aus to decide, as long as it can be done with little risk of introducing disease it is a great idea from a gene pool point of view, especially for uncommon species.
April 25, 200817 yr I agree, I'm sure the breeders here in Australia would love it if you bought birds from them for that much, but like you say if its the same price, or better to buy from oversea's why not diversify the gene pool by bringing in new stock... April 25, 200817 yr I joined a syndicate that bought in a number of birds in the 90's. They had to stay in a quarantine facility in Victoria, if I remember right? until cleared. The early imports didn't look very impressive and as a lot of people had disposed of there Aussie ones there was a lot concern at the time. The avian flue has stopped all that, although I have heard that pigeons are being imported in ? Edited April 25, 200817 yr by throwback

I doubt the old original Aussie bloodlines are still here. Unless you got outback and catch some wild ones.
April 25, 200817 yr why do you need to import pigeons??? Anyone wishing to purchase them let me know, I'll get you them by the hundreds... no I don't breed them... I will just take a big net and some seed in the city...
April 25, 200817 yr funny you mention pidgeons, i had a family pick up a pet bird today... the man was a show pidgeon breeder :| I think he thought we'd connect on some level with me starting to breed show birds... was quite awkward and hard to explain LOL!
April 25, 200817 yr what was hard to explain?? Pigeons are rats budgies are cute :hap: haha! Just kidding to all those budgie breeders...
April 25, 200817 yr The answer is no we cannot import I have enquired directly and below is the response. Even if we could import UK budgies here the quarantine is 6 weeks in UK and 6 weeks here in Aus. The birds are subject to all kinds of medication and are left in a weakend state. Some if not most would not breed. "Unfortunately, due to quarantine concerns, Australia does not permit the importation of budgies, including as pets. Whilst the Australian Government Department of Environment and Water (DEWR) has approved importation on environmental grounds, with several species listed on their List of Specimens Suitable for Live Import, quarantine concerns still need to be addressed to minimise the risk of disease spread. We are conducting an import risk analysis (IRA) of psittacine birds (parrots) that is assessing the quarantine risks and will hopefully lead to workable conditions so that people like you will be able to bring their pet birds to Australia. I am unable to give a definite timeframe for the conclusion of the IRA as we must also consider the impact of avian influenza worldwide. Information on the IRA will be placed on our website www.biosecurityaustralia.gov.au as it becomes available."

If most would not breed we wouldn't have all the UK bloodlines in Australia we have here today. Guys like Henry George, Robert Manvell, Kakoschke and the like who invested heavily on imported birds would have been very disappointed! The imports I got were jumping out of there skins! Why wouldn't they be! They have had the best veterinary care the state could give them. There argument is as usual flawed ! The humble budgie spends it's life in a aviary confined to the flight or the breeding box, where pigeons are allowed to fly around the country mixing with the local bird population! Doesn't make sense does it! But when has the Government ever made sense! :hap: Ikon, next time you speak to the DEWR ask them which Senior Departmental head is the Pigeon Racer!!
