Not sure if I'm allowed to create a poll but I figured I'll ask... How many people use club rings and how many use split rings? Those that use split rings, why and those that don't why not? I know you can't show with split but are there any other reasons? Is it worth joining a club just to get the rings if you don't want to show breed??

I use split rings for the simple reason that we only breed to increase our flock and by ringing them I can avoid inter breeding.

You can't show a bird with just a split ring.

I use both, one closed ring and split ring to I.D a bird that is split for something or belongs to a particular line.

White split ring for split lacewing cocks

Orange for split Opaline cocks

Blue for split Blue birds

ETC , ETC

I use club rings to remember all genetics and parentage.... the details are written down when the chick is rung...

Before that i used split rings, I have alot of split rings and will probably end up using them For birds who won't be rung with I.D. but i still want to remember the year they're born.

The biggest concern I have with Club rings is putting them on... I don't want to break a birds leg or anything... is it difficult to do? i like your idea throwback... saves you running back to the computer every 2 minutes trying to figure out which is split for what...

I'm the same, scares the heck out of me that's half the reason I don't want to head down that road, I'm nervous enough putting a split ring on

it's not hard unless they have grown their hard nails, the worst that can happen is a caught toe, which is easily un-latched from the ring... a broken leg or toe from a ringing would definatly indicate far too much force being used... so you'd hope they have not done that :S

The birds are rung at an early age. with experience you can look at the chisks feet and determine when to ring. I have never broken any bones in the chicks. I like the idea about the split rings I amy need to incorporate that in my birds.
