Posted April 23, 200817 yr Hi, I bought Charlie 12 days ago. He's finger tame, he'll let me scratch his neck. Although, he doesn't puff up his feathers yet when I scratch. He eats millet spray from my hand. I take him to different rooms to spend one on one time with him. The problem is, when I take him out of his cage, he'll sit on my finger for about two seconds and flies to his cage (flight feathers half way cut). If his cage is in view he flies to it. I know that he sees his cage as a safe place, but I really want him to hang out in the living room (that's where the cage is) with us without running away. when I'm in the computer room, he just sits on my shoulder or finger without flying away. Should I just have more patience? See I want to buy another bird, but my husband keeps telling me to wait because we'll end up with two wild birds Edited April 23, 200817 yr by Phoebe Double posted, deleted one.
April 23, 200817 yr Oh yes, have patience as it will take some time to train one. After he is fully trained, you can get another budgie and since he will have to be in quarantine in another room for a month, you can start training him. :ygbudgie:
April 23, 200817 yr Your husband is right. Read my article in the FAQ section about Taming Your Budgie you will find that I first tamed Pretty and then got Merlin and what happened when I did. . Be patient it takes a couple months if not more to gain complete confidence. If you want your bird really tame don't get another one until you have bonded completely with him. Welcome to the forums.
April 23, 200817 yr Patience is a must when trying to tame budgies. they do not always do what we want them to do. as for the cage, you are right that the reason he keeps flying to his cage is that he feels safe. when you take him out of the cage try to take him into a different room where he cannot see his cage, or if it is possible maybe try moving his cage into another room so you could have him in the living room with you and he will not be able to see his cage.
