First Aviary Advice Please

I sort of got the okay from the accountant (my wife) today to start thinking about a small aviary. I would not start in until spring so any idea's. I only want 10, 15 or 20 budgies. I want to do a concrete slab with a drain in the middle. Sizes wise I was thinkng about 2.4m Long x 1.2 deep x 1.8 high or similar, just std sizes. I was thinking of something like a garden shed but only half as deep with mesh on the front but those custom build garden sheds are expensive. Other than that I would need to buy a welder and weld up some angle and sheet all the sides bar the front. The only other idea I can come up with is to use colourbond fencing panels and the rails and they just tech screw together. I am a bit reluctant to buy one second hand as the Mrs won't wont some broken down old rusty shack it the back yard.

Any help would be great.

Hi Steve

What you are talking about is similar to mine here http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=18798

1.5 wide X 2.2 deep and 1.8 high. Made by Absco and cost just over $600. However, what I did was buy it from Harvey Norman on the latest deal - no deposit, no interest no payments until 2010. That's 22 months interest free.

Mate also something to think of. Search on eBay. I have seen some great bargains on there for pretty well near brand new aviaries.

Knocking up something that is not suitable for the birds and not visually appealing to the boss is a mistake.

Anything worth doing is worth doing properly.

Maybe you can do it in stages. Even if it takes you a couple of years.

*Slab with drainage.

*Frame

*Walls and roof

*Breeding cages? or nest boxes

*All the necessary basic equipment

*And last birds

Build to budget!

Build to experience!

Good advice guys. It will be a slow process. I won't be breeding so there will be no breeding box's or separate areas in the aviary. Just loads of pearches and toys. I will go to Bunnings over the weekend and check out those half depth garden sheds for small blocks. Mayber that is a checkerr option, that way all I need to do is put bird mesh on the front. Will also check this guy out. http://aussiecagesandaviaries.com/Modular%20aviaries.htm

I just checked out those Col Western aviaries and they appear to be the best value for money. I can get one that is a flat roof, 1.7m deep and 3m long and 2m high with heavey guage black wire on the front and one side for about $600.

The Mrs is slowly warming to the idea.

That sounds like a brilliant aviary Steve :hap:

i found colwestern seemed to be the cheapest in the newcastle area, mine is the 2.4m x 1.7m x 1.8m and they are so easy to put together. Hopefully your wife will let you get a aviary.

Tell your wife it will keep you off the streets, out of the pubs and at home :D

Well she bought me a simple little homebrew kit a few years ago and now I have a 4 keg tap setup inside and a full micro brewery outside and a storeroom full of 25kg bags of barley. So as you can see I have obsessive compulsive tendencies and she new that I would not want to stop with a little cage and my little Buddie Bird. But the way I see it we are only here for a short time and dead for a long time so I say GO FOR IT!

Also Kaz, is there a photo of your aviary on here somewhere?

Not really one of my current aviary Steve, as I am amidst rebuilding and the birds are in a temporary flight area. I have a new birdroom for breeding going up in two weeks and will be rebuilding the new flights straight after that. :D
