Can U Tame Avery Budgies

Featured Replies

Hi there. I got my (or my kids) first budgie yesterday (photos to come). I love Budgies and I have not had them since I was a little fella, about 30 years ago. I always wanted an avery and now I have not got mum saying NO, I guess I only have the wife to convince. Now the Budgie we got yesterday is very young and very very tame, and the kids 5 and 8 love him. But if I get an avery I guess there's no chance of having tame birds anymore....or is there.....I was thinking that I should keep Buddie boy in the little cage as a tame bird and just leave the avery wild? what do u you think? And if I get a small avery do I need to breed them (dumb question) or do I have to get a the one sex?

Hi Steve and Welcome :D

Sounds like you are on your way to becoming hooked on budgies again :hap: Your new budgie sounds like it has made a hit with the kids ( Best way to get the wife to agree....say its all for the kids :D ).

With aviary birds, its hard to keep them tame...once they feel freedom and can fly where they like, soak up the sun, play with friends, they dont really want to know you and certainly dont want to be held for any length of time once they have tasted freedom.

Might be a good idea to have an inside bird and your outside aviary birds like many budgie people do.

You can put any sex budgie in your aviary as long as there isnt nesting boxes in there or anything that looks like a place to lay eggs or have babies. Once you add nesting boxes to an aviary, there's all kinds of trouble.

An article on colony VS closed breeding http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/faqs/i...ighlight=colony

Look forward to seeing some pictures of your new budgie. There is a link in my signature on how to post pictures. We have a great FAQ section that a lot of people have added some great info to. Ask as many questions as you like.

Just popping in to say hello and welcome. :hap:

Hey there, Welcome to the BBC forum. I would agree with kaz. Probably a good idea to have an inside one as well as the ones in the aviary outside. as for breeding I wouldn't go with colony breeding but that is a personal choice... good luck and again, welcome to the forum.

Hello and welcome :D

I have to agree with Kaz too.

I have aviary birds and inside birds. My aviary birds are used to me and don't freak out when i handle them, but they are far from tame. My inside birds ( i have 3 together) are adorable, smootchy, lovely pets who are full of affection and character :D (bias i know hehe) - My children love the birds too :D

There needs to be a big warning somewhere about the addictiveness of budgies! :hap:
