Posted February 14, 200520 yr I have had my budgie about 6 weeks and he seemed to be coming along fine. The past two or three days, he is not eating lettuce (he usually eats some every day) and the feathers around his nasal holes (sorry don't know the proper term) seem to be a little bit crusty. He has done a tiny sneeze like noise a few times but only about two or three times in a day. He is eating normally and I have never seen him drink water (I assume he gets the moisture he needs from the lettuce). Oh and he also seems to have started to moult in the last week. Any advice appreciated. Soooz Edited February 14, 200520 yr by Suzy R Sopham
February 14, 200520 yr Hi suzy and welcome, It might be a good idea to let a vet have a look at your budgie as they are very good at hiding illnesses so the quicker you can get some antibiotics etc. in the better. In the meantime, keep him warm. Is he eating normally? Let us know how you get on won't you? Julie
February 14, 200520 yr Thanks Julie He is eating normally apart from the lettuce. Typical boy - he seems to hate water whether it is for drinking or bathing. Will let you know how I get on
February 14, 200520 yr Hi suzy, nice to meet you! It sounds like your budgie has the beginings of a bit of a cold, so really he does need veterinary intervention, as their respiratory systems are very weak. Kepp him nice and warm, but not too hot, and make sure his cage is well covered at nifgt, so as not to allow draughts in, as this could aggravate the problem. Also, be sure that his cage isnt in a draughty position, or in a window where he could quickly get heatstroke from concentrated sunshine. Keep us informed, we care about every budgie on here! Anne.
February 14, 200520 yr Thanks Anne He has just had a mammoth lettuce feast! I think I will get him into the vets in the morning anyway. He is nice and warm and seems normal in all other respects but I would much rather 'be on the safe side'. Will let you know how we get on. Soooz
February 14, 200520 yr good idea, budgies are prone to respiratory infections, which if left untreated can develop into pneumonia. hope your little buddy gets well soon my casper had a cold not too long ago, he was a bit wheezy, and he had antibiotics for a week.
February 15, 200520 yr Just back from the vets. The vet tells me he is a tiny bit laboured in his breathing but rather than being ill is just a bit off colour. He has some medicine to take (that will be fun since he doesn't drink water - at least in public) and I have to make sure he stays warm overnight. He doesn't look any the worse for his first expedition - I think I need a drink though! Thanks for your advice everyone! Soooz
February 15, 200520 yr Thanks for the update soooz, and im glad it dosent appear too serious. i wouldnt worry too much about him not drinking, he be getting a sneaky beakful when you are not looking! A nice steady, warm remperature combined with the tlc you are giving him should pull him through this. Very best wishes to and the little guy, I hope he improves very quickly! February 15, 200520 yr Thanks for keeping us up to date Suzy, hope he continues to improve a bit more each day, Julie
February 15, 200520 yr Glad to hear your bird is not seriously ill. I know that is a relief for you. If your medicine is put in his water instead of you giving it to him orally via syringe, you will need to not give him any veggies or fruits for the duration of his medicine. Putting meds in the water is not the most efficient way to get them in, but if that is the case it needs to be the only source of water. Otherwise, he will get his liquid intake from the lettuces and such, and not have any reason to touch the medicated water.
February 15, 200520 yr Ummm since we are talking about sickness mine died a year ago and died becasue fro 4 months made this weird clicking sound...do you know why it was this clicking sound what did it mean! I really miss!
February 16, 200520 yr Hi Imotive. You think your budgie died from making a clicking noise?Could you elaborate a bit? Because budgies make clicking noises naturally when they're relaxed or happy. Don't worry - he/she is in birdy heaven! Edited February 16, 200520 yr by Antt
