April 21, 200817 yr Buy some moulting aid...its very helpful during this time Edited April 21, 200817 yr by KAZ
April 21, 200817 yr KAZ does that help reduce blood feathers? Blue aways has a hard time with Molt, he greats stressed and a few times I have had to remove him from the cage and go in the hospital cage as he becomes unresponsive. He also gets masses of bloodfeathers which I HAVE to pull the larger one as he has a habbit of breaking them off and bleeding everyhere and since I work away from the house I am terrified of him bleeding out while I am not home to save him. Harley gets lots of pin feathers and other girls are normally okay. I have in the past gotten Vit A shots for Blue to help him thought his period, a stressfull and expensive option so any alternative would be great.
April 21, 200817 yr I have a tiel who gets blood feathers when he moults too. I am trying the moulting aid at the moment to see if this improves the blood feather issue I will be interested to read what you learn from the others
April 21, 200817 yr Blood feathers are a normal part of the molt, they are growing feathers. Once the feather is fully grown out, the blood supply is cut off. You can't lessen the number of blood feathers because they all have blood supply while they are growing out? Much energy is required to grow feathers, and molting affects birds differently. Some get grumpy, some want extra attention, some want to be left alone, others you'd never know except to see the pins because their personality doesn't change. Just make sure they are getting as varied diet as possible.
April 21, 200817 yr Breaking blood feathers would be more of an issue with a french moult inheritance than a normal budgie moulting problem.
April 22, 200817 yr Breaking blood feathers would be more of an issue with a french moult inheritance than a normal budgie moulting problem. huh? Sorry I have no clue what you are talking about what is the differnce between french moult and a normal budgie moulting? I know with Blue on average when he gets them he gets a crop of about 4 - 10 on his head, since he has a habbit of breaking them off and then one of us coming home and a run to the vets and an expensive weekend as we see them we pull them out and put "blood stop" powder (sorry don't know the true medical term) on the area. Blue is use to it and I think they annoy him as he gets a bit cuddley after we pull them out and does not seem to mind. We have done it about 3 times now (and I only got him in July 2007) first time there was only three or so and the vet talked me through the process on the phone the second time there was a rush to the vet he pulled three and then over the next week my sister & I pulled another 2 the last time we got I think 5 over a course of 3 or 4 days, no mess no fuss but we do go see the vet to get a vit A shot as it seems to perk him up.
