Hi again,

I am wanting to breed some mauves i have been told a few different ways to acheive this but i thoguht i would double check to be sure i have a sky blue and white spangle cock but he is carrying the violet gene in his neck and also half of his head is bright purple does anyone has any ideas of what to put to him to make violets or mauves? i was thinking maybe a sky blue cinnamon but was told that the ciny would wash the colour out? any help is greatly appreciated thanks again

I would put him with another violet if in fact you have a violet or a cobalt. You wont get any mauves with a sky.. The Mauves need to get 2 dark factors remember. One from each of it parents, so your parents should have one dark or 2 dark factors to get mauves.

Thanks for your reply you wouldnt credit it i have so many cobalts and violets but they are all males my females are all light blue, grey yellow or green!oh well off to the breeder for me!

How dark is your Green? If it's a Dark Green & is split for Blue you could get one from that…but I'm not sure Violets & Mauves are still a bit of a mystery to me. But Lady is right you need two dark factors…it goes Sky…Cobalt…then Mauve.

I think you can get Mauve from Cobalt to Cobalt & Cobalt to Dark Green/Blue.

Violet is an added factor and there is a single factor ahd double factor

2 cobalts could produce a mauve becaue they can get 1 dark factor from each parent

Its all too confusing! i might just try and find a female cobalt or violet and try for one? ill get there one day ;)

In breeding my best results for mauves have always come from violet to violets and violet to cobalt.

This came out ib the budgie News, yesterday.Breeding "traditional" Violets (violet cobalts)

Visual Violet XMauve= 25% Visual Violets, 25% Cobalts, 25% Violets Mauve, 25% Mauve.

Cobalt X Violet Mauve=25% as above.

Vsual Violets X Violets Mauve= 12.5% Visual Violets(DF) 25% visaul Violets(SF) 12.5%Cobalt,12.5 VM(DF) 25%VM(SF) 12.5% Mauve.

Breeding Visual Violets useing Sky Blues & the DF Violet factor,

Voilet Sky Blue(SF) X Violet Sky Blue(SF)=25%SB,50%VSB(SF)25%VSB(DF) visual.

VSB(SF) X VSB(DF)=50% VSB(SF)50%VSB(DF) visual

VSB(DF) X VSB(DF)=100%Violet SKB(DF) Visual. There is a couple of other X but ran out of room. ;)

Thats very helpful thanks guys but one more thing how do you know if a violet is a dark factor or a single factor? or does that track back to the parents?

Missylu,You have it sorta right.DF is Double Factor. But if you know the breeding of your birds, you will have abetter chance of breeding what you want.If you have a visual violet & cross it into your blues, you will come up with the colour you want.It mighten happen over night but it will happen. :fear
