April 27, 200817 yr Perhaps more correctly they are primary colours for humans because that is what our visual receptors are primed for. Rod receptors allow us to perceive light and dark. There is interaction between cones and rods and our neural processing of the light received by them = perceiving value, chroma and hue of different colours Shine a ultra violet light on them and it changes everything. Don Burke does a great presentation on this. What we see as Humans isn't necessary what the animal kingdom See's!! Edited April 27, 200817 yr by throwback

April 27, 200817 yr So all we have to do now is change our perception & wulla!!! A Red Budgie!!! It's all in the mind, so guys start thinking RED BUDGIES. Nothing is impossible. First off you have to convince your mind then the rest is easy. Edited April 27, 200817 yr by Norm

April 28, 200817 yr okay okay laugh if you will... When pairing to produce violets I often do view my birds through rosey-red coloured glasses/cellophane "filters" (literally) and I never have any trouble picking the most vibrant ones to pair to produce violets, because I can see which birds are carrying violet quite clearly using the rosey-red filters to remove extraneous wavelengths of light. Of course the eventual aim is to produce a violet budgie that looks red, without external filters and in natural light. Strange way to do it, but hey, anyone with any different ideas about how a red-looking budgie may be developed naturally I'm interested?
April 28, 200817 yr I think it will only come along through some external influence. Maybe environmental or some kind of man made exposure to something. I remember reading some rumours years ago that the spangle was a result of smuggled eggs passing through a airport X-ray machine. I think that story is more fantasy than fact! but who knows!?! Gamma Budgie!! Maybe it will come in the manipulation of the feather. Perhaps studying the feather of other parrot spices that have the red and pink plumage. It maybe possible to look for those characteristics in the budgies feathers. But again that would be a huge undertaking you would need the feather knowledge 10 times someone like Mannes. There is a breeder in the U.S that specialises in violets and he has reported some reddish look to some of them. But I think it would take a lot more than doubling up on a dark factor to get the results that could be line established. Pink budgie? I have been waiting for one since 1977 dreaming about it as a kid! Still waiting!
April 28, 200817 yr maybe 1 day there will be red budgies as well as white face greens or maybe white face creaminos

Also of interest, this site discusses extension and intensifying pigments in Bourkes parakeets, may have some relevance to budgerigar breeders also - although bourkes already have the red pigments, but might form the basis for this possibility in budgies. http://www.bourkes-parakeet.nl/pg/comparing-rub-op.html Has anyone tried breeding cinnamon or opaline-cinnamon double violet mauve fallows, or cinnamon or opaline-cinnamon double violet olive fallows to see what they look like? Pictures? I have an albino hen with pale pink sheen and lilac cheek patches so I am breeding her to a violet/ino and plan to continue this process to see if the offspring become any darker. (Show breeders would cringe!!!) I'm sure people have done this before but who knows, if not a discernably pink budgie maybe I will breed a bluetino.... hehehe! If there is too much blue sheen in the body, maybe introduce a texas clearbody to reduce the body pigments.
