Posted April 17, 200817 yr Hello all! I just found this forum today when I my new baby boy Optimus Prime (my boyfriend's keet) managed to dislodge a blood feather the petshop lady who grabbed him for me broke. Blood and chaos later, I managed to stop his bleeding thanks to the forum. The vet told me I shouldn't have even come since I had taken care of it so well, and os I dished out 160$ for a 30$ bird! Ouch! Here's Optimus Prime and Atlas; Optimus is the coloured one, and Atlas is the white and blue one. Both are different ages by a few months, but Optimus looked so sad (as he's getting to be older) at the petstore. He may be around less keets now, but at least the cage is bigger. I'm going to Australia for a year, and my boyfriend will be taking care of them, so other than feeding them and making sure they're healthy it'll be up to me to send money for new toys, and taking them to the vet to get their nails trimmed and checkups. I know it's not the best life, but I hope the two of them together instead of being alone helps (we got optimus after I started planning a few days ago to make sure he wouldn't be lonely). If I move I'll see if I can take them with me, if not, I'll find them a good home. http://s250.photobucket.com/albums/gg255/p...nt=Image032.jpg http://s250.photobucket.com/albums/gg255/p...nt=Image030.jpg http://s250.photobucket.com/albums/gg255/p...nt=Image031.jpg Optimus is a real beauty though, when he spreads his wings/tails at the edges it's yellow with black, and the middle is blue/teal. April 17, 200817 yr Welcome , they are beautiful. I noticed you said you got him a few days ago but I didn't notice that you said that your new bird was in quarantine. It is very important that new birds are quarantined before they join the existing bird or birds to ensure that your new bird is healthy and doesn't get sick from any stress from being moved into a new location. Birds can carry underlying illness (unlike a cat or dog) that can be passed on from bird to bird in a snap. Since it has been a few days it is probably too late for quarantine but heads up for next time. Keep an eye on both birds for any signs of illness just in case.
April 17, 200817 yr Well I welcomed you in the other post but just so you know I meant it... WELCOME! Your birds are very cute. Edited April 17, 200817 yr by JimmyBanks

The woman at the petstore said that if I had bought one at that place in the last month I wouldn'tneed to quarantine them, since all the budgies are in seperate areas (for instance, both are "rare" budgies, so they're the same). I guess she fed me the "Well the vets have checked them!" line. I'll remember that for next time, thank you so much. I don't have to quarantine them if I bought them both at the same time do I?
April 17, 200817 yr :ygbudgie: Sorry, yes. There might be scaley mites or something else about, pet store employees know ZERO! Hey new Canuck, where are you?
April 17, 200817 yr your budgies are beautiful, unfortunately pet stores usually are unreliable with information. the employees are usually clueless about budgies and they will say anything just to make a sell
April 17, 200817 yr Author :ygbudgie: Sorry, yes. There might be scaley mites or something else about, pet store employees know ZERO! Hey new Canuck, where are you? I'm outside of toronto right now going to art school. I'm quitting though this year because I don't think this is kinda the stuff I wanna learn. Where might you be? Also, thanks for all the info. When I got atlas the first time round, the woman wouldn't even let me pick one out until I had gone out and come back with a suitable cage (she herself actually owned a flock of birds!). So I guess I put too much trust into the employees when really only one of them was suitably qualified.
April 17, 200817 yr They are lovely. Where in Aus are you heading? There are lots of Aussies here and we'll steer you straight
April 17, 200817 yr Your budgies are very sweet i know, but i had to mention that your art is fantastic and very creative!!!! I hope you will continue with it even if you don't complete your studies
April 17, 200817 yr Author They are lovely. Where in Aus are you heading? There are lots of Aussies here and we'll steer you straight  I'm heading to north sydney, then up to brisbane, and hopefully ifI can make enough money there at my summer job I can switch over to Texas, Holland and the Phillipines/Malaysia to visit more penpals. My penpal over there is letting me stay with her in exchange for cooking and cleaning. Your budgies are very sweet i know, but i had to mention that your art is fantastic and very creative!!!! I hope you will continue with it even if you don't complete your studies Thank you very much. I'm hoping to try to get into the industry or change over to animation (like the old Warner bro's bugs bunny cartoons). The budgies are also very sweet to each other; right now Atlas is acting like a 16 year old girl swooning for Optimus' attention.
April 17, 200817 yr North Sydney, Bah... (Sorry Melbourne person here ) I haven't spent much time around the north coast area, but if you get a chance the south coast of NSW is gorgeous, they have some of the best beaches in the world. Melbourne's pretty good too
April 17, 200817 yr If you buy the from the same breeder at the same time and the birds were living together no but say you bought one at pet shop A and then at pet shop B down the street and bought them on the same day yes. Always quarantine, pet shops give the worse advice. Also make sure your vet is an avian vet that is very important as they know more about birds then a regular vet (I have learned this from experience)

I did go to an emergancy avian vet though, so I guess I did at least one thing right North Sydney, Bah... April 17, 200817 yr Welcome: I, too, am Canadian. And I too, thought your art was fantastic. I am envious you are going to Australia, and your birds are very cute! Is this a Roman theme with the names?
April 18, 200817 yr There might be a roman link, with atlas and optimus, but I am thinking that her boyfriend is a fan of the Transformers. Optimus prime is the name of the autobot (good guys) leader in the Transformers, what started as a cartoon, became a comic, and was a big budget Hollywood blockbuster last year. In my opinion, one of, if not the best movie of 2007. Anyway, Optimus can transform from Robot mode, where he is this 30 foot tall big strong robot who fights to protect innocents, to a Truck. Originally a no-nose mack Truck but now a red and Blue Kenworth Optimus Prime as a truck http://www.bioxd.com/imagenes/optimus_prime.jpg and as a robot http://tn3-2.deviantart.com/fs18/300W/f/20..._by_adonihs.jpg

Thanks for updating me on the pop culture behind the name!

Is this a Roman theme with the names? :ausb: Somewhat. I was reading a book my friend lent me, Atlas shrugged, and the colours reminded me of water/air/etc, like the titan. So I named him that. yup, i used to watch the cartoon welcome, i'm from ontario as well. Where outside of toronto are you? I'm out here in Oakville. It's a nice little town. Loved the transformers too Boy wanted to rename atlas to Megatron, since they're always squawking at each other.
