Posted April 15, 200817 yr I'm in Toronto Canada & my birds are having a light molt here. It's just beginning Spring time here. I am curious about the rest of you members & your birds. With our members all over the place in Australia & the USA & other parts of Canada & the UK. I'd like to know if you are experiencing a molt also with your birds. This got me thinking about this from Dave's Moult Post, he is from Sydney Oz, and mentioned his birds are molting & he is beginning to enter fall now. So please let me know where you are & what is happening to your birds & what is happening due to a change in season. Where ever you may be. Thanks
April 15, 200817 yr i am in the hunter valley area in nsw and it is starting to get cold here at night so i have noticed the budgies in the aviary are all moulting but my inside budgies have just finished moulting.
April 15, 200817 yr Merlin has started to molt but it seems when doesn't he anymore when he is finished with a light one he has a heavy one or something....every 4 months here no matter the weather.
April 15, 200817 yr My mature adults are moulting here - FEATHERS EVERYWHERE!!!!! and then in about 6 weeks all the babies will moult too so then there will be EVEN MORE FEATHERS!!! :hap: :fear
April 16, 200817 yr Author Merlin has started to molt but it seems when doesn't he anymore when he is finished with a light one he has a heavy one or something....every 4 months here no matter the weather. my budgies have both just finished going through a heavy molt. Interesting that you say every 4 months Merlin is molting. I have noticed since I've gotten these 2 birds that they molt every 3 or 4 months. I thought it was only 2 times a year. Obviously they have seasonal changes in Canada & Usa. Do you find this birdluv ? I know you are in Canada. Do your birds molt 4 times a year ? What about in the UK & OZ ? Deb mentioned her aviary birds molting now & her in house birds have already molted. I wonder why ? What is the difference ? IS it the age of the inside birds ? Or a different environment that made them molt first before the aviary birds ? I like hearing the differences & what you think.
April 16, 200817 yr the artifical heating and cooling that we have in our homes affects the birds because it is more of a constant temperature vs the up and downs of living outside but it would be interesting to see what those say that don't have artifical heating for sure.
April 16, 200817 yr A lot of things affect moulting as Elly says the temperature changes of the artificial heating and cooling as it imitates seasonal changes. Also any dietary changes like a different seed blend will force a moult. I find my aviary birds moult at a certain time and then the youngsters new to the avairy go through their first moults at a different time to the rest. Birds that have been breeding ...once back in the aviary and they have missed the "mass moult" in there...then they moult. So, at all times there is feathers in all directions at my place. April 16, 200817 yr Do you find this birdluv ? I know you are in Canada. Do your birds molt 4 times a year ? yes, l do find that they do go through a few molts through out the year. usually they are light molt's and one heavy molt. it does seem that the artificial heating and cooling temperatures do affect them.
April 16, 200817 yr My budgie seems to be moulting every 2 or 3 months ... ah she is a moulting monster..... by the way is it molt or moult? I have heard that a reptile that molts more often does so because they are healthier because their bodies are recieveing the proper nutrients to do so. Is the same true for birds?
April 16, 200817 yr ..... by the way is it molt or moult? It must be an "australian vs USA" thing. Our english over here is "moult" witha U.... just as we have the word colour and others like that...we have a U in the word and USA english doesnt.
April 16, 200817 yr All but 6 of mine are moulting too.... Young, Adults ... I might get some moulting aid stuff to help them along ... I am in South western Sydney and it's Autum and Getting really cold

April 20, 200817 yr Author My bird is still having his heavy moult, feathers everywhere!! Its amzing how many feathers they can loose at once! It's hard to imagine what an Aviary molt would look like. I know I think I vacuum way too many feathers with just 2 birds. I swear my girlfriend can make pillows with all the feathers they shed.
