Posted April 15, 200817 yr We bought Danni about 5 months ago as a young bird & at the time was told that it was a male. Today we found out that Danni is in fact a female, due to the fact that she has laid an egg. My mother used to breed Budgies back from 1960 - 1990 & over the yrs I've forgotten a lot. My wife & I are wondering Should we just remove the egg or just leave it there ? I can handle Danni easily as she spends a lot of time either sitting on my shoulder or perched on my arm or fingers. She only gets protective when I put my hand too close to her egg. She hasn't been around any other budgies since we bought her. Cheers, DavenRos
April 15, 200817 yr The good news is it's not fertile the great news is they make a great omlette... But more importantly Welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy yourself here. everyone here is really helpful (except for me) I'm just here cos I want a budgie not cos I have them and know alot about them Edited April 15, 200817 yr by JimmyBanks
April 15, 200817 yr Jimmy's right, he is not helpful. Now, i am not here to teach Biology, but unless your bird is special, it takes 2 to tango. I would remove the eggs. they are just going to go off. Where did she lay them? Can you remove anything that might look like a nest to her?
April 15, 200817 yr From what know a hen that lays eggs by herself is an OLD HEN!!!!!! Don't remove the egg this will encourage her to lay again wait untill she gives up on it .... I am guess she laid it either in a seed dish or on the cage floor? Edited April 15, 200817 yr by Neat
April 15, 200817 yr What if the egg was removed and replaced with a plastic egg? You can buy them for a couple of dollars for a pack of 8 or so
April 15, 200817 yr Do you know exactly how old your bird was when you bought her? If she was a very young bird she would not be old enough to breed but as Neat said at times an egg layer can be an older hen too. I would do what she suggests and keep the egg there she will loose interest and "we hope" stop laying and leaving them alone if you take them from her you are interrupting in her mind nature and she may start to become very possisive of them and continue laying because they keep disappearing.
April 16, 200817 yr Jimmy's right, he is not helpful. Dave this is the second time you have wrecked me in public... I'm begining to feel like you really don't like me. Just Kiddin' I know you just love my sarcastic remarks. :hap: :offtopic: I would do what NEAT said... listen to Dave... Edited April 16, 200817 yr by JimmyBanks
April 17, 200817 yr Author Hi, Thanks for the warm welcome. As far as I can tell the bird is about 1yr old. I'm only saying this due to the fact that we've only had her for approx 5 months & she didn't have her adult feathers when we got her. After reading the responses everyone had provided, I left the egg in the cage. Today she laid her 2nd egg. I'll probably end up getting her a mate later on in the year, but for the monent I'll just leave her be. Thankfully it's Autumn at the moment & the weather is cool with all this rain.
