Posted April 14, 200817 yr Hi i bought my first budgie today and was just wondering if someone could tell me what the sex is please and the age if possible, i read a few articles before buying buddy and to the best of my knowledge i think i have a young bird.... also i would like to put some natural tree branches in his cage for some variety but would like to know what trees are safe for him.

April 14, 200817 yr thanks throwback researching before i went paid off then! i wanted a young male It can be difficult to tell sex at a early age at the pet shop. The Ceres between the two can look the same, Young hens tend to have more white around there nostrils. It is a bit easier for a breeder, you can most times tell if a young bird is a hen by there behaviour. Even at a couple of weeks old hens will try to bite and squawk! But there are always exceptions to the rule.

I trawl the local neighbourhood for trees I can 'trim' so there is no specific type to worry about. Just make sure anything you use hasn't been sprayed with any chemicals.
