Hi guys

I just thought I would share a few pics of the birds I bought Friday night at our club meeting. We had been advised in the meeting before (last month) that a reputable breeder would be bringing along some birds for sale. So I put a few pennies aside and these are the guys I brought home with me. I chose five birds initially, but my partner wanted to buy a bird for me too, so he bought the sixth. So I came home with four lovely boys and two gorgeous girls. Of course, they already all have names. My friends all think Im insane because I have a name for every budgie I own, except for the babies that are for sale (Laughing out loud)

Here is the picture of all six of them. Smoo, one of my babies is in the picture as she had come for a ride to the club as it was a night to show greywings, lacewings and fallows and I took her as my greywing, and she had some travel companions on the way home.

On the front perch is Lola (light green,is that what yellow is classed as? recessive pied cinnamon hen). On the back perch from left to right is Smoo, the new love of my life Harrison (clearwing cock), George (normal blue cock), Boof (the green greywing cock my fiance bought), Cindy (also recessive pied cinny hen) and finally Carlos (skyblue spangle cock).

Carlos in front, Cindy just behind, Harrison front bottom, Lola behind and George in the back top corner.

George in front, Boof behind (oh my fiance also named him (Laughing out loud)) and I think Cindy in back corner

The latest love of my life, I cant wait to breed him, though I have to for a few weeks yet.......Harrison. He has such a cute baby face, yet he is an adult cock

And the last picture again of Harrison, cause I adore him, sitting next to Ellis one of my baby boys :D

I hope you enjoyed my pics and I didnt go on too much! The pictures dont seem to be showing up as resized............ ;)

Dave, how does quarantine fit into showing in general? I have only been to one bird show but the show cages were all well and truly too close to each other to be considered quarantined... I know birds have to be treated for various things before going and I imagine this would have been the case with these newbys

I guess there is a fair bit of trust involved. You have to be willing to trust that other breeders will only bring along birds in top health and hope that they aren't carrying anything that hasn't shown up yet.

They were bought from a highly reputable breeder. They were inside for a couple of days and I put them out with a couple of babies I am keeping and a couple of "old boys" that are passed it, but that I love. Theyre not in main population, but I seriously doubt they would be carrying anything anyway.

Very nice big stocky birds :bluebudgie:

PS I have bought from a highly reputable breeder also, but it didnt stop a healthy looking bird who was carrying psittacosis to wipe out a few birds in my stud that she was close to...in the time it took for them to contract it from her.

they are beautiful birds you have bought

Thank you all. I am pretty pleased with my new kids. I'm a long way from even thinking about going down the show road, but I would like to breed a bigger bird, not smaller ones :( I am however, possibly becoming the latest convert to breeding cabinets now I have found a place to put them. I am going to use one of the aviaries for just cabinets and use the current big breeding aviary for a flight/resting aviary only. So I am going to start shutting all my boxes down, which will be a fun job in itself. The girl I want to shut down at the moment still has one foster baby in her nest box and she has laid 3 eggs :( . I can possibly find "someone" to take on her eggs, but eventually as I shut the last girl down, until I get my breeding cabinets, I expect I will have to sacrifice a few.

THE COLORS ! OY ! MY EYES are HAPPYS ! Can I have that purply one ? Puuuuuuuuleaseeeee ? SMOO is amazing. They all are. But I want a SMOO. Breed some Smoo JR's !

You picked up some nice birds there Sunnie, yes you don't need to worry about showing, you can get plenty of pleasure breeding your birds to improve their quality for yourself. Good luck with your breeding once you have everything set up.

Teehee ;)

Smoo wont be having babies for a very long time.......she's only a baby herself and Im quite happy to say I bred her myself too :D But, she's not going anywhere. For a 2 month old, I am really happy with her development. I originally thought she was a he, but the way she bites, yells and her cere is whiter than I thought it was pink.........I have decided she is a she. Who knows though, at 2 months, that could change! haha

You and i are in about the same place when it comes to colony breeding and cabinet breeding :D

I am shutting down boxes at the moment too. I have left all boxes in the aviary for now as i still have one chick to fledge (any day now). I have been regretfully removing any eggs that are laid :( it's a lot harder to do than it sounds. I am doing it this way to stop the hens fighting over the nest box with the chick in it. Once the chick is fledged than i will remove all boxes at the same time :D

I hope your new birds bring some awesome genes to your flock. My BG (show type) with a small pet type hen produced a lovely BIG baby, Cookie

I have a big show type cock - grey spangle called Alaska. I am looking forward to getting him into a cabinet, but I have no idea who with yet haha. He is currently "paired up" with a lovely young cobalt opaline.......cock (Laughing out loud). I hope I can change his point of view! Hopefully, my couple of show types will give me some Cookies too......I dont want crumbs!

Just a question, from a dumb beginner... If you have 2 aviaries why don't you remove all the cocks for the time being until all the eggs have hatched, that way you won't have to go through the heartache of throwing out the eggs... It might delay the breeding cabinets but once your last chick has fledged you will be able to remove all the boxes together and there won't be any hassles with extra eggs... Then once the nest boxes are back, you can put the cocks back... Just a thought...

Good luck with everything and your newbies look great!

Remove the cocks and let the hens finish off their clutches by themselves? Is this what you mean? I am removing the hens as they finish up their clutches, so they dont go down again and not putting other hens back, so eventually they will all finish up. I have a lot more boys than girls actually and if I put all my boys in the other aviaries, they could end up overcrowded. With some clutches, I will remove the hens just before their babies fledge too, to stop the next round before it goes too far. The one particular hen I mentioned earlier has a foster baby and I was a bit worried if I let her go too early, the baby would get forgotten. I am nervous with fosters as I have seen one out too early and no parents were feeding it. I put it back in the box though, and it was fed for a couple more days in the box and then fledged and is doing fine.

where does quaranine fit into all of this?

Your birds are very beautiful. I always thought as you have Dave too that no matter what quaratine is very important when you are bringing new birds into your flock no matter where they come from because the move is very stressful. I understanding when you are bringing birds back and forth from shows that there is a potential danger but not like when you are setting them free into an aviary where they are in total contact with each other. I am very surprised that many blew the quarantine issue off. (these are only my thoughts).

Edited by Elly

I think that was clarified Elly as the birds aren't actually in the aviary with the main flock.

Your right about that but they are still not in quarantine from the existing birds at all and are with babies that are more suspectible (I would think). Anyways everyone has their own thoughts these are mine.

I agree, but it was probably too late once they had travelled home with Smoo anyway to keep them away from him. Smoo being a baby probably shoudn't have gone at all but hindsight is 20:20

I remember that Kaz...you had a whole post on it here at BBC.
