Soaked Soup Mix- And Spinach And Bok Choy ?

Featured Replies

I was thinking about trying my budgies on the dried soup mix that you get from the supermarket, the one with split peas, lentils, barley, etc in it. Soaked (or possibly boiled haven't worked that part out yet). Does anyone know of any issues with this before I give it a go?

I have used this and its fine...as long as it is just the seed and lentils and no additives like flavours and salts etc. My birds like it. I often serve the dried split peas and soup mix lentils and grains.

How long do you persevere with a new food before you give up if they don't eat it initially? Most of my birds were adults when I got them and weren't really used to eating all the nice stuff I like to try them on so often these sorts of things go untouched.Meant to say there are no additives in it, it's just the legume mix

I just dont give up ;) all it takes is one budgie to try a new thing and eventually they all do. If all else fails always sprinkle budgie seed over the top of a new food...just a little :D

Fine then :sigh:. I'll buy an industrial sized pack and just keep putting it in there until the little buggers give in :(Laughing out loud):

Mix it in with something they DO like...even if its just budgie seed ;)

not sure what you are talking about here? Dried doup mix? What type? Any more info?

Dried doup mix, aka dried soup mix...is like a packet of dried lentils...split peas like used in pea soup...and other things like barley in it too ;)

Dave, I just bought some, it comes in a 1kg pack in the aisle where all the packet soups, noodles, etc are. It has in it split green peas, red lentils and barley, I have also bought an extra packet of the peas and a packet of chick peas to mix through it as it was mostly barley. My Woolleys was clearing all of these for $1 a pack.

My shopping list also included: celery, carrots, apples, spinach, corn, bananas and continental parsley. Does anyone know whether bok choy is okay? Spinach is pretty expensive at the moment but they had large bok choy, the same size as the spinach for aboput half the price. Wasn't sure if it was okay though.

Some of those things are for my other birds (Bananas and some of the carrots and apples will go to my ringnecks and lorikeet) but they should have a feast for the next couple of days ;)

I use bok choy more than I use spinach...mainly due to spinach having issues with absorption of calcium to my breeding birds. Anmy of the chinese vegies are good...bok choy.. pak choy etc

Thanks Kaz, you can ignore my other post then ;) Do you use silverbeet?

Silver beet and spinach to me is the same thing...I use either in the aviary but not for breeding birds. I use bokchoy grated carrot and soaked seed for breeding birds

( oh..and yes the soaked soup mix too :D )

Well can you tell I don't generally eat either! ;) okay, so I'll avoid the silverbeet/spinach for the moment(although they'll get what I've bought for now as I certainly won't eat it) and then we'll stick to bok choy, etc. as it is a colony and they do get the urge to breed at times so I'd rather not have anything in there that is going to mess with calcium, etc.

Thanks Kaz

Neither do I ;) REVOLTING stuff :D: YUK !!

What will you soak it in????????

Water

Try water Dear Henry… Dear Henry… try water…in what should I fetch it Dear Lisa…we could go on…(Laughing out loud)…

I am thinking out loud here as much as anything but I would have thought that the dried lentils, peas and barley would have lost most of their vitamins and proteins byt the time they get to the budgies.

Anyone thought of that.

Do you mean to say I have been eating pea soup with no nutritional value :bluebudgie:

A pea is simply a dried out seed, exactly the same as a dried out sunflower seed or millet seed. If birds can get a fair chunk of their nutritional neesd from millet, etc seeds I can't see why a dry pea would be any different Kaz.

Dried peas, beans, lentils and chickpeas are low in fat and good sources of protein, starch, fiber, iron, calcium and minerals. blah blah blah so actually Kaz you and the birds are eating fine

I bought some of that soup mix and some more split peas. So i am going to soak them, then I will give them all some mixed with bok choy and pak choy, and some new corn on the cob as well. damn, my birds eat well.

My birds cost more to feed than Ken and I :P :hap:
