Posted April 12, 200817 yr My new aviary has begun construction today, I have taken some pics to show you the progress from day to day, cant wait till its finished!! The old aviary was similar to our garden shed, extremely hot in the summer so the new one should be like a "Budgie Sheridan" (not as good as the Hilton though Kaz!!)

April 12, 200817 yr Author Looking good! Great progress thus far and I'm sure it will be much cooler. Very excited for you We have some insulation left over from the larger aviary so we're going to use it on the new one. So that should help with the temperature as well. The men had a great joke about installing a ceiling fan,(only on slow) , whirlybird, shower recess etc etc etc for them while they're at it! I'm going to plant some small shrubs in the flight area as well, any other ideas are very welcome!!!
April 12, 200817 yr Looks wonderful !! Good to see you have trained the "babies" to help as carpenter offsiders also

April 20, 200817 yr Author We did some more work on the aviary today and its looking good! I have taken some photos for you all to see the progress from last week. Rain has slowed us down again, so probably wont be able to do any more work till next weekend due to work committments. (Notice my foremen -the dogs, checking everythings to their specifications!) April 20, 200817 yr In light of Wayno's issues with mice, and I now have a rat getting into Ken's aviary and killing birds, I am inquiring as to what flooring you will have in the aviary to stop anything digging through ?
April 21, 200817 yr Author In light of Wayno's issues with mice, and I now have a rat getting into Ken's aviary and killing birds, I am inquiring as to what flooring you will have in the aviary to stop anything digging through ? Hi Kaz, the enclosed area has a concrete floor and we put some wire on the floor in the flight area. So fingers crossed we dont have a problem with mice or rats or I will run a mile!!!! :fear We've had the few odd mice here and there around the larger aviaries but no major problem.
April 21, 200817 yr it is looking good, it is a shame about the rain slowing things down. I have the same problem, i have materials to start working on my new aviary but have not been able to do any work because of the rain.

May 31, 200816 yr Is that sand over the top of the concreted floor? Back in the day my aviary never used to be covered and we had sand over the paving.... as soon as any kind of liquid hit the poop on the sand it turned it to sludge and was a major breeding ground for bacteria... Looks great by the way

I tossed and turned about concreting the flight area but decided against it. We have small bird wire under the sand to try and stop any mice (as if that's going to happen!) Should be close to being finished tomorrow hopefully!
